Court orders detention of Bosnia federation head in graft probe

SARAJEVO (Reuters) - A Bosnian court on Sunday ordered that the president of the country's autonomous Muslim-Croat federation and four other officials be detained for a month after prosecutors said they took bribes to arrange pardons for convicts.

Federation President Zivko Budimir was arrested on Friday along with 19 others in the most high-profile anti-corruption drive in Bosnia since independence more than two decades ago.

In handing out the month-long detentions, the court said it believed that both Budimir and his co-accused aide Petar Barisic might try to flee the country because they held Croatian passports, a court spokeswoman said.

She added that the three other officials were being held because the court was concerned they could obstruct the investigation and influence accomplices and witnesses.

Lawyers for the accused said they would appeal against Sunday's ruling.

Budimir's Party of Justice and Trust condemned what it called "meddling in politics by the state prosecution" and described his arrest as a "a show of strength put on for the sake of the public."

The arrest of Budimir, who holds top executive powers, looks likely to exacerbate a political crisis that blew up last year when he refused to approve a government reshuffle and the appointment of judges to the constitutional court.

The police said 10 government officials were among the 20 people arrested on Friday. Several of the others were suspected drug traffickers with alleged links to officials.

Under a U.S.-brokered peace deal to end the 1992-95 war, Bosnia was split into two autonomous regions joined by a relatively weak central government - the federation and the Serb Republic - each of which enjoys a high degree of autonomy.

Engadget's laptop buyer's guide: spring 2013 edition

Engadget's laptop buyer's guide spring 2013 edition

You asked; you got it. When we ran our first-ever laptop buyer's guide earlier this year, many of you wrote in, requesting that we include more affordable picks (not just, you know, twelve-hundred-dollar Ultrabooks). So with this latest seasonal guide, we've added budget and mid-range options, some with touchscreens, some without. The only unfortunate thing? We're expecting Intel to drop its new Haswell chips sometime this summer, so it should go without saying that it might be worth waiting for the various PC giants to refresh their lineups before committing to anything. If you absolutely can't wait, though, we've picked our favorites, with a particular emphasis on models we don't think will be going anywhere anytime soon.

Grizzlies Beat Clippers 94-82 In Game 3: Zach Randolph, Memphis Cut L.A. Series Lead To 2-1

MEMPHIS, Tenn. ? Zach Randolph's fast start helped the Memphis Grizzlies return to their inside dominance.

Randolph had 13 of his 27 points in the first quarter, and he finished with 11 rebounds and the Grizzlies beat the Los Angeles Clippers 94-82 on Thursday night to pull within 2-1 in this first-round series.

"Zach was huge," Memphis coach Lionel Hollins said. "He got started quickly. He had 18 at halftime, and that got us going and everyone else just flowed into that. I thought our defense, for the most part, was solid."

Randolph hadn't scored more than 13 in each of the first two games and had only 12 rebounds combined in Los Angeles. He looked much more like the All Star who had 45 double-doubles this season, and he also had six offensive rebounds after leading the NBA with 310 in the regular season.

The man known as "Z Bo" was the last of the Grizzlies off the court in pre-game warmups, and he had his shot working early.

"I definitely wanted to come out and be aggressive," Randolph said. "They've been double-teaming, triple-teaming me. So just go fast, you know hit a couple jump shots and open it up. Most definitely, I wanted to come out and be aggressive."

The Grizzlies snapped the Clippers' nine-game winning streak by outrebounding and dominating on second-chance points, the same things Los Angeles did so well on its home court to start the series in beating Memphis at its own style.

Game 4 is Saturday in Memphis.

Marc Gasol accepted his trophy as the NBA's Defensive Player of the Year before tipoff, then scored 16 points. Quincy Pondexter and Tony Allen had 13 each. Mike Conley was 1 of 9 but had 10 assists and no turnovers on a night where he was so sick he sipped on soda and didn't talk much.

Pondexter said Gasol anchored the Grizzlies on the defensive end to help them return to "Grizzlies' basketball" and called Randolph and Gasol two of the best big men in the NBA.

"They are really great," Pondexter said. "Marc is the best center in my eyes. Zach has the ability to play like the best power forward in the league. When those two guys are doing what they do, it's hard to stop us."

Blake Griffin scored 16 points for the Clippers. Matt Barnes had 12, Chauncey Billups 11 and Jamal Crawford and Caron Butler 10. Chris Paul had eight points on 4-of-11 shooting and added six assists.

"We didn't make any adjustments," Hollins said of defending Paul. "We just played better."

Paul wasn't happy with himself after he had five of the Clippers 18 turnovers. He also didn't get to the free throw line either.

"It's uncharacteristic of us. You know I mean especially me," Paul said. "I had five turnovers tonight, and our turnovers led to 17 of their points. They got offensive rebounds, things we hadn't let them do in Game 1 and Game 2. We just got to be better."

The game was a continuation of the roughness in Los Angeles with a flagrant foul, three technicals and a lot of whoofing along with a bear hug by Randolph after Barnes' flagrant foul.

The Clippers had beaten the Grizzlies three straight in Memphis, including a Game 7 win in the first round a year ago. They also had won six of the last seven in the series overall.

Memphis outrebounded the Clippers 45-33, including 17-5 on the offensive boards. That gave the Grizzlies a 22-4 edge in second-chance points, which was similar to what the Clippers did to Memphis in Game 1 when they held a 25-5 advantage. The Grizzlies also outscored Los Angeles 40-26 in the paint and led by as much as 16.

"That's what they do," Clippers coach Vinny Del Negro said. "We have been able to contain it pretty well for the first couple of games, but we just didn't do a good enough job. We've got to find a way to get everybody in there."

The Clippers last led 10-8 in the first quarter before the Grizzlies took control with Randolph hitting four of his first five shots and all five free throws for 13 points in the quarter.

They tried to make a run late in the third and into the fourth as they have so often to beat Memphis in this series. They got as close as 74-69 with 8:39 left on a pair of free throws by Barnes.

"He came out aggressive, and that's what they needed," Griffin said of Randolph.

Memphis answered with a 7-2 spurt to push the lead back to double digits on a reverse layup by Pondexter off an assist from Randolph. During the run, Paul stole the ball from Grizzlies guard Jerryd Bayless and passed to Eric Bledsoe for a 3 he missed. Gasol got the rebound.

The Grizzlies outscored the Clippers 23-20 in the first quarter and 24-19 in the second, taking a 47-39 lead into halftime. They hadn't led by more than six in Los Angeles and were up by seven in the first quarter back on their own court. They pushed that to 12 in the second quarter.

Memphis' lead grew to 14 a couple times in the third, the last at 68-54 on a pair of free throws by Pondexter with 1:22 left.

That's when the Clippers went on a 10-2 run featuring back-to-back 3s by Crawford and then Lamar Odom. Ronny Turiaf dunked to pull the Clippers to 70-64 with 11:04 to go.

Pondexter then scored five points for Memphis as he got the rebound after he missed his second free throw attempt and put it back while being fouled by Barnes.

Pondexter added the free throw, pushing Memphis' lead back up to double digits with 10:16 remaining.

Notes: Randolph wound up part of a double foul situation for a third straight game in this series with Griffin late in the game. ... The Clippers hadn't lost in Memphis since Game 5 last year in the playoffs and won 24 road games during the regular season. ... The Grizzlies went 28-of-38 at the free throw line compared to 21-of-23 for the Clippers. ...The Clippers' 82 points were two shy of a franchise low in the postseason. ... Pondexter had only five total points in the first two games of the series. ... Paul had averaged 23.5 points in the first two games of the series.

nbff_landscape2

As a resident of Southern California and one who is apparently eager to lose a lot of sleep for the sake of film, I plan to attend the festival, hopefully gaining access to many different screenings of films that I have my eye on.? I will do my best to provide reviews for films that have both been making there rounds through festivals and ones that are making their debuts at the NBFF.? I do plan to try something a bit different this year in terms of how I handle my coverage, so hopefully I will be able to provide even more information, while still in a timely manner.

Anyone with further interest should make sure to visit the Newport Beach Film Festival?s official website.? Furthermore, anyone who is actually in the Southern California area should try to make an effort to come down and be a part of the festival.? Having gone through this before, I can safely say there are many interesting and exciting films to check out, let alone plenty of stars and filmmakers currently hanging out in the area, so you never know who you might run into, let alone how much you may end up appreciating some of the films you see.

"Life Is a Question, and Your Choices Are Your Answer"

Are the choices you're making each day leading you to where you want your life to go? That's the big question posed by this quote from author and real estate franchise founder Gary Keller.

This quote, "Life is a question, and your choices are your answer," comes from Keller's co-authored book, The One Thing, which is all about focusing on what matters most to you and what will make the biggest difference in your life.

As Vickie Elmer writes on her WorkingKind blog, the quote teaches us to ask ourselves how our lives can really change the world:

Choose the place where you will be extraordinary, where you will have thousands of believers and your bosses will find others to handle the less important tasks on your plate because they?re so impressed with your ?One Thing.'

Vickie's blog post is chock full of other great quotes from Keller, including: "The smaller I make my life, the bigger it gets."

If you find life pulling you in all sorts of directions, now's the time to take stock and create more focused answers.

What planets are made of: Findings establish counterintuitive potential planet-forming materials

Apr. 24, 2013 ? A team of researchers led by Artem R. Oganov, a professor of theoretical crystallography in the Department of Geosciences, has made a startling prediction that challenges existing chemical models and current understanding of planetary interiors -- magnesium oxide, a major material in the formation of planets, can exist in several different compositions. The team's findings, "Novel stable compounds in the Mg-O system under high pressure," are published in the online edition of Physical Chemistry Chemical Physics. The existence of these compounds -- which are radically different from traditionally known or expected materials -- could have important implications.

"For decades it was believed that MgO is the only thermodynamically stable magnesium oxide, and it was widely believed to be one of the main materials of the interiors of the Earth and other planets," said Qiang Zhu, the lead author of this paper and a postdoctoral student in the Oganov laboratory.

"We have predicted that two new compounds, MgO2 and Mg3O2, become stable at pressures above one and five million atmospheres, respectively. This not only overturns standard chemical intuition but also implies that planets may be made of totally unexpected materials. We have predicted conditions (pressure, temperature, oxygen fugacity) necessary for stability of these new materials, and some planets, though probably not the Earth, may offer such conditions," added Oganov.

In addition to their general chemical interest, MgO2 and Mg3O2 might be important planet-forming minerals in deep interiors of some planets. Planets with these compounds would most likely be the size of Earth or larger.

The team explained how its paper predicted the structures in detail by analyzing the electronic structure and chemical bonding for these compounds. For example, Mg3O2 is forbidden within "textbook chemistry," where the Mg ions can only have charges "+2," O ions are "-2, and the only allowed compound is MgO. In the "oxygen-deficient" semiconductor Mg3O2, there are strong electronic concentrations in the "empty space" of the structure that play the role of negatively charged ions and stabilize this material. Curiously, magnesium becomes a d-element (i.e. a transition metal) under pressure, and this almost alchemical transformation is responsible for the existence of the "forbidden" compound Mg3O2.

The findings were made using unique methods of structure prediction, developed in the Oganov laboratory. "These methods have led to the discovery of many new phenomena and are used by a number of companies for systematically discovering novel materials on the computer -- a much cheaper route, compared to traditional experimental methods," said Zhu.

"It is known that MgO makes up about 10 percent of the volume of our planet, and on other planets this fraction can be larger. The road is now open for a systematic discovery of new unexpected planet-forming materials," concluded Oganov.

This work is funded by the National Science Foundation and DARPA.

CSN: O's extra-inning winning streak ends at 17

BALTIMORE ? For more than a year, the Orioles won extra inning games. Seventeen in a row.

At some point, the magic was going to end. Wednesday was the day.

After watching Josh Stinson serve up four home runs to put them in a hole, the Orioles clawed their way back into the game with Toronto, but finally lost it 6-5 in 11 innings before 14,981 at Oriole Park.

Stinson was recalled before the game and sent to Norfolk afterward. The Orioles bullpen was chewed up, and the most dependable of all the relievers, Jim Johnson suffered a loss.

?That's the type of baseball we play. It's just one of those things. We play a lot of close games and I wouldn't expect anything to change in that department,? Johnson said.

The Orioles (12-9) closed out a most successful home stand by winning two of three from the Blue Jays, Dodgers and Rays. The 6-3 record gave them an acceptable 9-6 mark against American League East opponents.

?I thought we played pretty well for the most part. It would have been nice to close today, but they got us today, but I think it was a pretty decent homestand overall,? Nate McLouth said.

Now, the Orioles head west for a season-long 11-game road trip to Oakland, Seattle and Los Angeles.

They?ll be there without Stinson and with another reliever, perhaps Zach Clark, who?s been starting for Norfolk.

Three of the homers allowed by Stinson were solo shots to Rajai Davis, Edwin Encarnacion and Jose Bautista. The first was a two-run shot by J.P. Arencibia in the second.

By the time Stinson left with two outs in the sixth, the Orioles trailed 5-2, but they scored three runs in the seventh to tie it.

?They came back and that's what I've been told about these guys. They never quit and they keep going. So they got us back to 5-5 and made it interesting for a couple innings. It was exciting,? Stinson said.

The Orioles had won 17 straight extra-inning games, their last 16 in 2012, and the first of this season. Only the 1959-60 Pittsburgh Pirates, who won 21 consecutive, won more.

?It's not something I dwell on. I know our guys don't. But I understand how it's noteworthy," manager Buck Showalter said.

In the 11th, Arencibia and Munenori Kawasaki singled with two outs off Johnson (1-2), who had won and saved the previous two games of the series..

Johnson hit Brett Lawrie with a pitch to load the bases and walked Macier Izturis on four pitches to score Arencibia with the go-ahead run for Toronto (9-13).

Esmil Rogers (1-1) pitched the 10th and got the win. Manny Machado tried to score on J.J. Hardy?s single in the bottom of the 10th, but was thrown out, and the game went to the 11th.

Casey Janssen pitched the 11th for his sixth save.

In 22 1/3 previous major league innings, Stinson allowed two home runs. He tripled that total on Wednesday.

Stinson retired the first three batters, and took a 1-0 lead into the second. Nate McLouth and Adam Jones doubled off Brandon Morrow in the second, and it was their last hit until the seventh.

Arencibia?s two-run shot to center, his eighth, came with one out in the second. Davis hit his first with one out in the second while Encarnacion and Bautista hit theirs leading off the fourth and sixth. It was Encarnacion?s fourth and Bautista?s fifth.

Stinson was hooked with two outs in the sixth. He allowed five runs on five hits in 5 2/3 innings. He walked one and struck out three.

The Orioles scored a run without a hit in the third. McLouth walked with one out. Machado grounded to third and Lawrie threw it wildly to first. McLouth advanced to third. Nick Markakis grounded to short, but? Machado slid hard enough into second baseman Emilio Bonifacio that he prevented any chance of a double play.

In the seventh, the Orioles finally showed some life. Nolan Reimold walked with one out. Ryan Flaherty doubled to right to score Reimold and Aaron Loup replaced Morrow.

McLouth singled to score Flaherty, and after McLouth stole his fifth base of the season, Machado tripled to right, and score was tied at 5.

?We didn?t play a bad game by any means. Their hits came with some damage. We weren?t quite able to push that last one across a couple of times,? McLouth said.

NOTES: The four home runs allowed by Stinson were the most by any Orioles pitcher making his debut.

-Machado?s triple was the first of the year for the Orioles.

-Brian Matusz has not allowed any of the 10 runners he inherited this season to score. He?s stranded all 24 he inherited since he became a reliever last August.

Anchor fired after video of his on-air F-bomb goes viral

By Ian Sager, TODAY

Editor's note: The video above includes profanity.

A live camera can be a daunting thing. Mistakes are mercilessly broadcast to often unforgiving viewers and bosses. ?The first time live on camera can be one of the scariest things that happens to somebody in this business. ?But do jitters excuse all mistake?

A.J. Clemente ? a weekend news anchor for NBC affiliate KFYR ? uttered his first words as a TV anchor,?but before the young aspiring journalist knew it, he was trending for all the wrong reasons.?

When the F-bomb is dropped, especially on live TV, it's loud.

Clemente's bosses weren't amused. The fledgeling anchor was first suspended, then outright fired. Monica Hannan,??KFYR's news director, explained the decision on Facebook:

To all of you who are writing in...I want to apologize for an incident that occurred prior to our early newscast this evening, when one of our employees used profanity on the air.

He did not realize his microphone was on, but still, that's no excuse. WE train our reporters to always assume that any microphone is live at any time. Unfortunately, that was not enough in this case. WE can't take back what was said. The person involved has been suspended until we resolve the situation. All we can do at this point is ask for your forgiveness, and I can offer my personal assurance that I will do my best to ensure that nothing like this ever happens again under my watch.?

But did the punishment suit the crime? Weigh in below:

Should the local news anchor who cursed on air have been fired or given a second chance?

New private rocket set to launch today after delays

NASA / Bill Ingalls

The Orbital Sciences Corporation Antares rocket is seen on the Mid-Atlantic Regional Spaceport (MARS) Pad-0A at the NASA Wallops Flight Facility on April 16, 2013 on Wallops Island, Va.

By Tariq Malik, Space.com

A U.S. spaceflight company is hoping the third time's the charm in order to launch a brand-new rocket into space on its maiden flight Sunday.

After two delayed launched attempts, the privately built?Antares rocket?is once again poised to blast off from a seaside pad at NASA's Wallops Flight Facility on Virginia's Eastern Shore. Liftoff is set for 5 p.m. EDT (2100 GMT).

You can?watch the Antares rocket launch live on SPACE.com?beginning 4:30 p.m. ET (2030 GMT), courtesy of NASA's webcast.

Today's launch attempt will be the third in a week for Antares, which was built by the Dulles, Va.-based Orbital Sciences Corp. A minor mechanical glitch thwarted a launch try on Wednesday just minutes before liftoff. Strong winds prevented and an attempted launch on Saturday. [LaunchPad Photos: Antares Rocket Ready to Fly]

The Antares rocket is designed to launch Orbital's unmanned Cygnus spacecraft on cargo delivery missions to the International Space Station for NASA. Orbital has a $1.9 billion contract to provide at least eight cargo deliveries using Cygnus and Antares, but first the company wants to make sure the rocket will perform as expected.

"Obviously we would like to have gone Wednesday. But going through the prelaunch procedures a couple of times now is great experience for our launch team," Orbital spokesman Barron Beneski told SPACE.com in ?an email. "Practice now will pay dividends later when we are down to a small launch window, less than five minutes, for our [space station] resupply missions later this year."

Orbital Sciences?has a three-hour window for today's ?attempted launch. The 13-story Antares rocket will lift off from the new Launch Pad 0A at the Mid-Atlantic Regional Spaceport at the southern tip of Wallops Island, Va., where it shares land with NASA's Wallops Flight Facility is based. The NASA center has long been the home of the agency's small sounding rocket launches and balloon science projects.

"We have also been pleased with the performance of the vehicle and the launch facility. We have not been working any technical issues, which has been encouraging," Beneski said. "That's remarkable since this is a first time launch for the rocket and the pad."

Today's launch attempt will not carry a full Cygnus spacecraft into orbit. Instead, the rocket is topped with a mockup that will mimic the weight of an actual cargo ship. The rocket is also carrying three?coffee cup-size Phonesat satellites?? named Alexander, Graham and Bell ? as part of a space technology experiment for NASA. A fourth nanosatellite, called Dove 1, is also being flown for a commercial customer, Orbital officials said.

Orbital is one of two companies with NASA contracts to deliver space station cargo. The Hawthorne, Calif.-based firm Space Exploration Technologies (SpaceX) also has a $1.6 billion deal for at least 12 cargo missions using its Falcon 9 rockets and unmanned Dragon space capsules.

NASA's space shuttle fleet retired in 2011, so the space agency is relying on Orbital Sciences and SpaceX to fly American cargo to the International Space Station. NASA officials also hope to launch American astronauts to the station using private spaceships by 2017. Currently, the U.S. space agency relies on Russia's Soyuz spacecraft to ferry crews to and from the station.

There is a chance that observers along? much of the U.S. East Coast could spot the Antares rocket soaring toward space during today's launch test. NASA has advised local observers to watch the launch from its Wallops Flight Facility Visitors Center or the nearby Assateague National Seashore.?Maps and graphics released by Orbital?officials, however, suggest the launch could be seen from as far north as Portland, Maine, and as far south as Charleston, S.C., weather permitting.

Rescuers struggle to reach China quake zone

By Michael Martina and Maxim Duncan

LUSHAN, China (Reuters) - Rescuers struggled to reach a remote corner of southwestern China on Sunday as the toll of the dead and missing from the country's worst earthquake in three years climbed to 203 with more than 11,000 injured.

The 6.6 magnitude quake struck in Lushan county, near the city of Ya'an in the southwestern province of Sichuan, close to where a devastating 7.9 temblor hit in May 2008 killing some 70,000.

Most of the deaths were concentrated in Lushan, a short drive up the valley from Ya'an, but rescuers' progress was hampered by the narrowness of the road and landslides, as well as government controls restricting access to avoid traffic jams.

"The Lushan county centre is getting back to normal, but the need is still considerable in terms of shelter and materials," said Kevin Xia of the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies.

"Supplies have had difficulty getting into the region because of the traffic jams. Most of our supplies are still on the way," Xia said.

In Ya'an, relief workers from across China expressed frustration with gaining access to Lushan.

"We're in a hurry. There are people that need help and we have supplies in the back (of the car)," said one man from the Shandong Province Earthquake Emergency Response Team, who declined to give his name.

In Lushan, doctors and nurses tended to people in the open or under tents in the grounds of the main hospital, surrounded by shattered glass, plaster and concrete that fell during the quake. Water and electricity in the area were cut off by the quake.

"I was scared. I've never seen an earthquake this big before," said farmer Chen Tianxiong, 37, lying on a stretcher between tents, his family looking on.

Nearby, an elderly woman sat dazed mumbling to her son, while nurses wiped blood from another woman's foot as her husband cradled her head.

In another tent, Zhou Lin sat tending to his wife and three-day-old son who were evacuated from a Lushan hospital soon after the quake struck on Saturday.

"I was worried the child or his mother would be hurt. The buildings were all shaking. I was extremely scared. But now I don't feel afraid any more," said Zhou, looking at his child as he slept soundly wrapped in a blanket on a makeshift bed.

Premier Li Keqiang flew into the disaster zone by helicopter to comfort the injured and displaced, chatting to rescuers and clambering over rubble.

"Don't be sad, we will rebuild after this disaster and your new homes will be even better than before," state media quoted him as telling residents.

Xinhua news agency put the number of dead and missing at 203, with almost 11,500 injured, 960 of them seriously.

Chen Yong, the vice director of the Ya'an city government earthquake response office, told reporters that the death toll was unlikely to rise dramatically.

"We understand the situation in most areas. Most of the casualties have been reported. In some remote mountain areas, it is possible that we don't fully understand the situation," he said.

SCHOOLS WITHSTAND QUAKE

But no schools had collapsed, unlike in 2008 when many schools crumpled causing huge public anger, prompting a nationwide campaign of re-building.

"Our schools are the safest and sturdiest buildings," Chen said. "The Chinese government has put a lot of money into building schools and hospitals. I can guarantee that no schools collapsed."

Xinhua said 6,000 troops were in the area to help with rescue efforts.

Rescuers in Lushan had pulled 91 survivors out of rubble, Xinhua said. In villages closest to the epicenter, almost all low-rise buildings had collapsed, footage on state television showed.

The China Meteorological Association warned of the possibility of landslides in Lushan county, with more than 1,000 aftershocks registered.

Ya'an is a city of 1.5 million people and is considered one of the birthplaces of Chinese tea culture. It is also the home to one of China's main centers for protecting the giant panda.

Sichuan is one of the four major natural gas-producing provinces in China, and its output accounts for about 14 percent of the nation's total.

Sinopec Group, Asia's largest oil refiner, said its huge Puguang gas field was unaffected.

The U.S. Geological Survey initially put the magnitude at 7, but later revised it down.

In 2010, a 7.1 magnitude earthquake killed 2,700 people in Yushu, a largely Tibetan region in northwest China.

New carnivorous dinosaur from Madagascar raises more questions than it answers

Apr. 18, 2013 ? The first new species of dinosaur from Madagascar in nearly a decade was announced today, filling an important gap in the island's fossil record.

Dahalokely tokana (pronounced "dah-HAH-loo-KAY-lee too-KAH-nah") is estimated to have been between nine and 14 feet long, and it lived around 90 million years ago. Dahalokely belongs to a group called abelisauroids, carnivorous dinosaurs common to the southern continents. Up to this point, no dinosaur remains from between 165 and 70 million years ago could be identified to the species level in Madagascar-a 95 million year gap in the fossil record. Dahalokely shortens this gap by 20 million years.

The fossils of Dahalokely were excavated in 2007 and 2010, near the city of Antsiranana (Diego-Suarez) in northernmost Madagascar. Bones recovered included vertebrae and ribs. Because this area of the skeleton is so distinct in some dinosaurs, the research team was able to definitively identify the specimen as a new species. Several unique features -- including the shape of some cavities on the side of the vertebrae -- were unlike those in any other dinosaur. Other features in the vertebrae identified Dahalokely as an abelisauroid dinosaur.

When Dahalokely was alive, Madagascar was connected to India, and the two landmasses were isolated in the middle of the Indian Ocean. Geological evidence indicates that India and Madagascar separated around 88 million years ago, just after Dahalokely lived. Thus, Dahalokely potentially could have been ancestral to animals that lived later in both Madagascar and India. However, not quite enough of Dahalokely is yet known to resolve this issue. The bones known so far preserve an intriguing mix of features found in dinosaurs from both Madagascar and India.

"We had always suspected that abelisauroids were in Madagascar 90 million years ago, because they were also found in younger rocks on the island. Dahalokely nicely confirms this hypothesis," said project leader Andrew Farke, Augustyn Family Curator of Paleontology at the Raymond M. Alf Museum of Paleontology. Farke continued, "But, the fossils of Dahalokely are tantalizingly incomplete -- there is so much more we want to know. Was Dahalokely closely related to later abelisauroids on Madagascar, or did it die out without descendents?"

The name "Dahalokely tokana" is from the Malagasy language, meaning "lonely small bandit." This refers to the presumed carnivorous diet of the animal, as well as to the fact that it lived at a time when the landmasses of India and Madagascar together were isolated from the rest of the world.

"This dinosaur was closely related to other famous dinosaurs from the southern continents, like the horned Carnotaurus from Argentina and Majungasaurus, also from Madagascar," said project member Joe Sertich, Curator of Dinosaurs at the Denver Museum of Nature & Science and the team member who discovered the new dinosaur. "This just reinforces the importance of exploring new areas around the world where undiscovered dinosaur species are still waiting," added Sertich.

The research was funded by the Jurassic Foundation, Sigma Xi, National Science Foundation, and the Raymond M. Alf Museum of Paleontology. The paper naming Dahalokely appears in the April 18, 2013, release of the journal PLOS ONE.

EBay grows 1Q earnings but outlook falls short

NEW YORK (AP) ? EBay's high-flying stock price declined in after-hours trading Wednesday after the e-commerce bellwether's outlook for the current quarter fell below Wall Street's expectations.

The company grew its earnings and revenue in the first quarter, as shoppers continued to flock to eBay.com and other sites and mobile apps, to buy everything from cars to handbags to wedding rings. EBay's payments unit, PayPal, continued its fast-paced growth and expansion beyond the Web. People can now use their PayPal accounts to make purchases in some brick-and-mortar stores. Nonetheless, eBay's revenue, along with its guidance for the current quarter, fell shy of Wall Street's expectations ? though its full-year guidance stayed unchanged.

The San Jose, Calif.-based company's stock dropped by $1.60, or 2.9 percent, to $54.50 in after-hours trading. The stock closed down 91 cents at $56.10 in the regular session amid a broad market decline. That is up 10 percent since the start of the year and more than 55 percent from a year ago.

EBay's 2013 earnings forecast surpassed and revenue outlook met Wall Street's expectations, indicating that the second half of the year could be stronger than the first. EBay also recently issued an upbeat long-term forecast, saying it expects revenue to hit as much as $23.5 billion in 2015, up from 67 percent from $14.1 billion in 2012.

President and CEO John Donahoe said he wouldn't call eBay's second-quarter guidance cautious, adding that it's "highly consistent with what we thought."

"Expectations got a bit ahead of themselves," Donahoe said in a phone interview.

The company's business in Europe was "modestly softer" than expected amid the economic uncertainty there, Donahoe said, while the U.S. was slightly stronger than expected.

EBay said revenue at PayPal grew 18 percent to $1.55 billion and ended the quarter with 128 million registered accounts, up 16 percent from a year earlier. Its marketplaces unit, which includes eBay.com, grew revenue by 13 percent to $1.96 billion and ended the quarter with 116 million active users, an increase of 13 percent.

Some analysts are worried about short-term challenges EBay faces. Benchmark analyst Daniel Kurnos believes EBay is confronted with tight retail inventories and potential pressure on PayPal's profit margins from credit card companies, if they start charging fees for using the payments service.

EBay Inc. said Wednesday that it earned $677 million, or 51 cents per share, in the January-March period. That's up 19 percent from $570 million, or 44 cents per share, in the same period a year earlier.

Adjusted earnings were 63 cents per share, up from last year's 55 cents and a penny above analysts' expectations of 62 cents.

Revenue grew 14 percent to $3.75 billion, slightly below Wall Street expectations. Analysts polled by FactSet were looking for $3.77 billion.

For the current quarter eBay expects earnings of 46 to 48 cents per share and adjusted earnings of 61 to 63 cents per share. Analysts estimated 66 cents per share.

The company's revenue forecast of $3.8 billion to $3.9 billion is also slightly below the $3.95 billion analysts expected.

Gross merchandise volume, an important metric that measures all items sold on eBay excluding vehicles, rose 13 percent to $18.33 billion.

Mobile commerce remains a strong suit for eBay. The company said it gained 2.8 million new users during the quarter who signed up through a mobile device. EBay said its mobile apps have been downloaded 162 million times since launching in the first quarter of 2008.

Australians rejoice after Scott's Masters victory

BRISBANE, Australia (AP) ? The roar that followed Adam Scott's Masters-winning putt at Augusta National could only be heard on the television broadcast so many thousand miles away on Australia's east coast.

But distance doesn't really matter Down Under.

Within seconds of Scott's 12-foot putt finding the cup on the second playoff hole at Augusta, fans who had been awake since dawn Monday and were either on their way ? or purposely late ? to work did a lot of celebrating on their own.

Commuters cheered on buses, and car horns tooted. Even a radio interview with the prime minister on the national broadcaster was interrupted to give updates on the Masters ? well before the result was known.

Golf fans everywhere in this sports-mad country rejoiced.

Shopkeepers at Peregian Beach, near a resort course designed by Adam's father, Phil Scott, spoke of the pride of having a Masters champion from their neck of the woods.

No Australian had ever won the green jacket, although a lot had come close at Augusta. The 32-year-old Scott tied for second with fellow Australian Jason Day two years ago.

It almost seemed as though it wouldn't happen and Greg Norman, himself on the receiving end of so many painful Masters memories, wondered if the heavens had decreed that an Australian would never win at Augusta.

Scott thought he had the Masters, and his first major title, clinched when he made a 20-foot birdie putt on the 72nd hole of regulation and was sitting in the scoring room waiting for Angel Cabrera to finish off his round in the final group Sunday.

But Cabrera produced a great shot of his own, a 7-iron to 3 feet for birdie on 18 to force a playoff.

"The golf gods can't be this cruel to Australia," Norman said in a text to friends who were watching nervously.

The preparations for a possible Australian win began overnight Sunday on social media, hours before Scott, Day and fellow Australian Mark Leishman began the day as three of the top five on the leaderboard.

Aussie golf fans even developed their own Twitter hashtag: itsourtime. And Scott obviously thought it was, too.

Tom Watson, who missed the cut at Augusta this year, tweeted: "You showed great courage Adam ... and resiliency from last year's disappointment at Lytham." Scott bogeyed the last four holes last year to lose the British Open by a shot to Ernie Els.

Jarrod Lyle, an Australian golfer recovering from leukemia, posted: "you (censored) beauty Scotty. Great win well deserved."

Jessica Korda, a member of the LPGA tour who won last year's Women's Australian Open, tweeted: "Adam Scott!!!!!!!!!!!!!! A million girls just fell in love."

Scott and Day came close to winning in 2011 at Augusta, but were left stranded by South African champion Charl Schwartzel's late run of four consecutive birdies.

Another Australian, 2006 U.S. Open champion Geoff Ogilvy, was also in the hunt that year, but finished tied for fourth, four shots behind. Surprisingly, Ogilvy didn't qualify this year.

Norman made an art form out of not winning at Augusta. In 1986, Jack Nicklaus shot a 30 on the back nine to take the green jacket from him. In 1987, Larry Mize chipped in from 140 feet during a playoff to leave Norman second. In 1996, a six-shot lead over Nick Faldo wasn't enough when Norman shot a final-round 78.

In his victory speech Sunday night, Scott was gracious in thanking his mentor: "Greg Norman has been incredible to me and all the young golfers in Australia. Part of this definitely belongs to him."

Reached at his home in south Florida, Norman told The Associated Press: "I'm over the moon. Sitting there watching Adam, I had a tear in my eye. That's what it was all about. It was Adam doing it for himself, and for the country."

Norman was so nervous watching TV that he said he went to the gym when the final group made the turn. He headed home for the last four holes and was texting with friends as his emotions shifted with every putt.

"I can only imagine how everyone else felt when I was playing," Norman said.

Australian politicians quickly got in on the act, with Prime Minister Julia Gillard saying: "By any measure this is a historic day for Australian sport." Sports Minister Kate Lundy said the high-profile win would inspire other Australians to take up the sport as golf returns to the Olympics at Rio in 2016.

Keith Urban, the Nashville-based country music star who grew up in Queensland state not far from Scott, tweeted: "ADAM SCOTT!!!! You are the man! Congrats mate. -KU."

A lot of Urban's mates appeared to agree, with nearly 400 congratulatory Scott retweets sent out. A tweet from British boy band One Direction member Niall Horan was retweeted 12,000 times in less than three hours.

"Yeaaahhhh Adam Scott ya legend! Doin it for the Aussies!" Horan said.

The win seemed to transcend all sports in Australia, with former star cricketer Shane Warne describing Scott's winning putt as "absolutely awesome." Rugby union international Quade Cooper hashtagged "fistpump" and said Scott's new piece of wardrobe was the "coolest green jacket going around."

There was a minor faux pas Monday from the sport's national governing body, the PGA of Australia. Late in the final round, it sent out a tweet saying: "We need a mistake from the big hitting Argentine down 13."

A few minutes later, the PGA was criticized by a California follower: "Really? (hash)badsportsmanship."

The PGA of Australia quickly tweeted a reply: "We shouldn't wish bad luck for anyone and the previous tweet was bad sportsmanship Clearly let our enthusiasm get in the way."

Cabrera hit into the creek on the 13th and later bogeyed the hole to fall out of the lead.

Social media was set to be the haven for suggestions for next year's champions dinner at Augusta, with Scott getting to call the shots on the menu.

Will it be crocodile canap?s, emu burgers, kangaroo steaks or even koala-shaped cupcakes for dessert? Whatever, it should probably be pretty interesting after waiting all these years.

Waze CEO Noam Bardin: the future of mobile is fighting for a user's time

Waze CEO the future of mobile is fighting for a user's time

Noam Bardin, CEO of Waze, just took the stage here at D:Dive Into Mobile, taking part in a wide-ranging discussion hosted by Liz Gannes. Aside from dodging questions about potential acquisitions, Bardin made no bones about how he saw the future of mobile playing out. Of course, this is a man who spends essentially no time focused on the desktop web -- given that Waze is mobile only, one shouldn't be surprised. According to Bardin, "the next five years will be about fighting for time with users," and he pointed to Facebook Home as the de facto example of that.

Rather than crafting their own OS and "doing what Microsoft has done -- fighting a war that ended five years ago" -- Facebook decided to make a time play on a massive OS. From there, Bardin confessed that in major markets, he sees Waze as Google's "only real competition."

What will happen to the 'Rainbow Nation' once its icon Mandela dies?

By Rohit Kachroo, Correspondent, NBC News

JOHANNESBURG, South Africa ? Discussing what will happen to the country once its iconic leader Nelson Mandela dies has long been a culturally and politically taboo subject in South Africa. Out of respect for the 94-year-old former president, government officials never publicly refer to plans for what happens after his death, and in private, they often use cryptic synonyms to discuss the inevitable.

View images of civil rights leader Nelson Mandela, who went from anti-apartheid activist to prisoner to South Africa's first black president.

But Mandela?s frequent trips to the hospital ? most recently to be treated for pneumonia ? have forced the question of ?what happens next?? further into the public domain.

Of course, no one knows what democratic South Africa will look like without Mandela.

Some believe the frail freedom fighter is somehow holding the disparate parts of the ?Rainbow Nation? together from his sick bed, and fear an outbreak of racial violence once he dies. Others disagree and think the young nation is still struggling ? but that it has moved beyond the apartheid-era issues.??

?It genuinely frightens me?
?I am not a racist, but?? -- It sounds like an ominous opener.

Elaine was about to outline her prediction ? an unpopular one ? of what will happen when South Africa loses Mandela. She feels the need to declare her belief in racial equality before setting out her fear that South Africa?s delicate social harmony might be torn apart when the ?Father of the Nation? is gone.

?I am really scared that the country will explode. There are a lot of people out there who are just holding themselves back until he dies. It genuinely frightens me,? said Elaine, who asked not to be identified because of the sensitivity of the topic. ?

?I will be mourning like everyone else, but I will be mourning at home. I won?t be leaving my house that day because I?m concerned about what will happen,? she said. ?I don?t know what they will do. But I feel that they have a right to be angry.?

?They? are South Africa?s 40 million black people who, a generation after the end of apartheid, are disproportionately enduring its economic legacy. Largely, they remain the ?have-nots? of what the World Bank has called the world?s most unequal society.

Georgina Sefara is a 20-year-old student in Johannesburg, South Africa.

Elaine, a 26-year-old white woman, is certainly one of the ?haves.? Born into a rich family, she now works as a well-paid financial advisor in Johannesburg?s northern suburbs. ?I may be paranoid,? Elaine admitted, ?but there are lots of people who think like me.?

A ?patronizing? view

Georgina Sefara is a 20-year-old student. A black woman, born after Mandela?s 1990 release from prison, she has never truly known racial segregation and resents the view that violence will erupt after Mandela?s death.

?Many white South Africans think that there will be apartheid in reverse. That?s what they?re afraid of. You hear many whites saying they will move to Australia when that happens.

?But [the violence] will never happen? It?s patronizing and outdated to think that it will.?

?Most of my parents? generation are still angry,? said Georgina's classmate Carol Phago, an English student from Johannesburg. ?Many still hold a grudge,? she said, referring to the former apartheid era.

?But maybe there are different enemies now. People are angry with the government, not with their fellow South Africans.?

Dissatisfaction with government
Rage is certainly building over the government?s inability to improve the lives of the millions of black South Africans who live in impoverished townships.

Nelson Mandela was discharged on Saturday from the hospital where he had been undergoing treatment for pneumonia, South Africa's presidency said in a statement. NBC's Ron Allen reports.

In addition, there is anger over the country?s inability to shake off the title as ?the rape capital of the world.??

According to a 2012 World Health Organization report, more than one in five men reported raping a woman who was not a partner and 14.3 percent of men reported having raped their current or former wife or girlfriend.

The issue of rampant domestic violence in South Africa gained international attention recently with the fatal shooting of Reeva Steenkamp by Olympic runner Oscar Pistorius.

Geoffrey Manulake, is a 32-year-old security guard in Johannesburg, South Africa.

There is frustration with a police force that is faced with constant accusations of corruption and incompetence. The shooting death of 34 striking miners by police officers last August has amplified the recurring claim that the behavior of the state under democracy has become too similar to that of the apartheid government.

It is one reason why security guard Geoffrey Manulake, 32, has rejected a career in the police force. He feels disillusioned with the public institutions of his country and worries about how they will develop in the post-Mandela period.

?Politicians feel the need to satisfy themselves. They just want to line their own pockets,? said Manulake. ?I look around at our leaders and feel that we cannot lose this icon. Nelson Mandela is the one who united our country and united the world.?

?But we have come a long way since ?94,? he said, referring to the year Mandela was elected president in South Africa?s first multi-racial elections. "People who talk about violence are wrong.?
