Are ROMs Really Necessary on a Nexus Phone?

Are ROMs Really Necessary on a Nexus Phone?Dear Lifehacker,
I've rooted my Galaxy Nexus per your guide, but now everyone tells me I should flash a custom ROM. What's the point? Don't people flash custom ROMs to get stock Android, which the Nexus already has?

Sincerely,
Wondering Why

Dear Wondering,
For most users, getting a "stock" ROM is one of the big draws of rooting. However, it's far from the only reasons you'd flash a ROM. Heck, some people flash custom ROMs that keep HTC's Sense interface or Samsung's TouchWiz interface. So why flash? Here are some of the biggest benefits to flashing a ROM, even on a Nexus device.

You Get the Latest Updates

This is a pretty minor point, but it's worth mentioning that not all Nexus devices have the latest version of Android. Ridiculous, right? The Verizon Galaxy Nexus, for example, is still stuck on 4.1?not too bad, but still one version of Jelly Bean behind the others. And, of course, older Nexus devices won't get upgraded forever, so those users will need custom ROMs to bring them up to speed on the latest iterations of Android.

You Get Tons of Extra Features and Tweaks

The big draw of custom ROMs, though, are all the other features they bring. They aren't just stock Android?they're stock Android with lots of other very handy features added by the community. For example, here are some of the features you might find in custom ROMs:

Are ROMs Really Necessary on a Nexus Phone?

  • CyanogenMod (and other ROMs based on it) add the ability to launch up to four other apps from the lock screen slider, adds settings toggles for things like Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, or Airplane Mode in the notification bar, and options like "Quick Reply" to notifications for SMS messages
  • The AOKP ROM offers lots of customization options, making it easy to theme your ROM, choose different boot animations, change the colors of your widgets and interface elements, and more. Also, unicorns.
  • ParanoidAndroid is a popular ROM based off CyanogenMod with the addition of something called "Hybrid Mode," which lets you run your OS?or just certain apps, if you choose?in their tablet or phablet mode. This can give you a bit of extra screen space on your phone, make certain apps better to navigate, or could just make running apps on a tablet better.

These are just a few small examples, but there are a lot of other features you'll find in any given ROM. Often, you'll even find features from one ROM integrated into another ROM, so you can try out a few and see which one works for you.

The bottom line is that flashing a custom ROM gets you a ton of extra features that you won't find in stock Android. If you haven't tried one out yet, I highly recommend it?if you don't like it, you can go back to stock at any time! But you're bound to find a few features you didn't even know you wanted until you had them.

Sincerely,
Lifehacker

"Argo" boosts Oscar chances with two weekend award

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - Iran hostage drama "Argo" won its second big award in two days on Sunday, boosting its chances of winning a best picture Oscar next month in a race that had been considered wide open.

"Argo" won best cast ensemble, the top prize, at the Screen Actors Guild Awards, while Daniel Day-Lewis and Jennifer Lawrence took lead acting honors.

On Saturday, "Argo" won the Producers Guild Award - a key measure of Hollywood sentiment - beating "Lincoln," "Les Miserables," and "Silver Linings Playbook," which are all Academy Award best picture contenders.

"There was absolutely no way I thought we would win this award," the film's director and star, Ben Affleck, told reporters backstage after the SAG win. "Argo" is the true story of the rescue of U.S. diplomats stranded in Tehran after the 1979 Islamic Revolution.

Asked about his movie's Oscar chances, Affleck said he was not in the business of "handicapping or trying to divine what's going to happen down the road."

"I don't know what's going to happen, nothing may happen, but it's a wonderful opportunity to be on the ride," Affleck added.

The Screen Actors Guild (SAG) ceremony is among the most-watched during Hollywood's awards season because actors make up the largest voting group in the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, which chooses the Oscar winners. The SAG honors are selected by about 100,000 actors working in the United States.

SAG prizes acting over directing, screenplay writing and other skills that usually factor into the Oscar best picture choice.

PLAYING DOWN OSCAR HOPES

British-born Day-Lewis, who has picked up a slew of awards for his intense portrayal of U.S. President Abraham Lincoln's efforts to abolish slavery in "Lincoln," confirmed his status as front-runner for what would be his record third Oscar on February 24.

But the actor played down his Oscar hopes backstage. "Members of the academy love surprises, so about the worst thing that can happen to you is if you've built up an expectation," Day-Lewis told reporters.

Accepting his award on stage to a standing ovation, he recalled that "it was an actor that murdered Abraham Lincoln and, therefore, it is sometimes only fitting that, now and then, an actor tries to bring him back to life again."

In one of the most closely contested categories, Lawrence, 22, was chosen best lead actress for playing an outspoken young widow in "Silver Linings Playbook" over Jessica Chastain's feisty CIA agent in Osama bin Laden thriller "Zero Dark Thirty."

Tommy Lee Jones, 66, won the best supporting actor trophy for his turn as radical Congressman Thaddeus Stevens in "Lincoln," beating strong competition from Robert De Niro, who played a gruff father in "Silver Linings Playbook."

Anne Hathaway, 30, won her first SAG award for her supporting role as the tragic Fantine in musical "Les Miserables."

"I got my SAG card when I was 14 ... And I have loved every single minute of my life as an actor," said Hathaway, accepting the statuette.

SAG also handed out awards for performances in TV dramas, comedies and mini-series, and gave a lifetime achievement award to actor Dick Van Dyke.

In TV drama, the British cooks and countesses period show "Downton Abbey" won best ensemble cast. "Breaking Bad" star Bryan Cranston was named best actor and "Homeland's" Claire Danes best actress.

"Modern Family" won the best comedy cast ensemble award for a third consecutive time. Alec Baldwin won best TV comedy actor for the 8th time for his role as an egotistical executive in "30 Rock" and his co-star Tina Fey took the honors for comedy actress ahead of the show's final episode on Thursday.

Thousands march against gun violence in Washington

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Thousands of marchers rallied in Washington in favor of gun control on Saturday, including residents of Newtown, Connecticut, where a mass elementary school shooting reignited the U.S. gun violence debate.

Speakers - including Education Secretary Arne Duncan, lawmakers and actors - urged the protesters carrying such signs as "What Would Jesus Pack?" to lobby Congress and state legislators to back gun control measures.

Duncan, who said one student had died from guns every two weeks while he was chief executive of Chicago's public schools, denied that gun control was about limiting firearm rights guaranteed by the U.S. Constitution. Murders in that city last year rose to the highest level since 2008, according to police.

"This is about gun responsibility. This is about gun safety. This is about fewer dead Americans, fewer dead children, fewer children living in fear," Duncan said.

Organizers backed President Barack Obama's call for a ban on military-style assault weapons and high-capacity ammunition magazines and background checks for all gun sales. They also urged safety training for all buyers of firearms.

Marchers stretched for several blocks along Constitution Avenue as they approached the rally site in the shadow of the Washington Monument.

Participants included politicians from Maryland and the District of Columbia, including Washington Mayor Vincent Gray, as well as actress Kathleen Turner and Marian Wright Edelman, founder of the Children's Defense Fund.

90-MINUTE RALLY

The protest came a week after gun rights supporters held rallies across the United States to oppose firearms control.

The 90-minute rally was organized by Molly Smith, artistic director of Washington's Arena Stage, and her partner, and co-sponsored by One Million Moms for Gun Control, an advocacy group.

One Million Moms organized similar events on Saturday in about a dozen cities, including San Francisco and Austin, Texas.

About 100 residents of Newtown and surrounding areas attended the rally and march down Constitution Avenue. A gunman killed 20 first-graders and six adults on December 14 at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, and numerous speakers and marchers said that rampage had spurred them to act.

"It's difficult to get laws changed when politicians are bought out, but we have to start somewhere," said Amy Journo, 38, an occupational therapist whose two sons, ages 5 and 7, attended Sandy Hook.

"I want to ensure that they (children) are safer, not just my children but all across the United States," Journo said.

A spokesman for the U.S. Capitol Police declined to give an estimate of crowd size, citing department policy.

Obama's proposals, the most significant attempt at gun-control in decades, face an uphill battle in Congress. The proposals are strongly opposed by gun advocates, such as the powerful National Rifle Association.

The lobbying group has said that current laws need better enforcement, issues of mental health should be addressed and that tighter laws could not have prevented Newtown.

About 11,100 Americans died in gun-related killings in 2011, according to preliminary data from the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. There were 19,766 suicides by firearms in 2011, the CDC said.

The Tibetan spiritual leader addressed a crowd of about 4,000 in a conversation with his biographer Pico Iyer.?

Calling the 20th century a century of bloodshed and violence, the Dalai Lama urged that the ?21st century be a century of dialogue.? The title of his talk, "Kinships of Faiths: Finding the Middle Way," headlined his hopes for comity even in the potential divisive realm of religion.?

In his words, secularism is mostly misunderstood as being against religion. He said in India every religion is respected and our fore fathers framed the constitution of India by keeping space for every religion. "There are so many religions in India but the country is stable," he said.

The Delhi rape case came up, when a reporter asked his view on the Indians demanding capital punishment for the rapists.

"I have been noticing crimes in big cities like Bombay and Delhi? when these kinds of things happen people take it for granted. Now the time has come that we must make efforts for special protection to women, physically and men?s protection is education," said the Dalai Lama.?
The rape case trial opened yesterday. Before the trial opened Indians were debating whether the accused should be chemically castrated or even put to death if found guilty. The Dalai Lama expressed his dislike of capital punishment. ?Since many decades Amnesty International started a movement banning death sentence. I signed it. I do not like death penalty but it is up to the country's law to decide,? he told the reporters after his session.
He also asserted that the independent Tibet should be a secular and democratic country. The Dalai Lama spoke about the China-Tibet dispute, although conceding that he has now retired from his political role. He urged good relations between India and China are must as they are the ?most populous nations in the world? and put forth India as an example for China to learn to be democratic.
This year 285 speakers will be speaking during the five day schedule. Last year, around 120,000 people had attended the five day festival.?

Chavez starting more medical treatment in Cuba

SANTIAGO, Chile (AP) ? Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez has defeated a respiratory infection and has begun additional medical treatment in Cuba after struggling with complications following cancer surgery more than six weeks ago, a government spokesman said Saturday.

Venezuelan Information Minister Ernesto Villegas said that it remains unclear how soon Chavez could return home, and did not specify the kind of treatment he is receiving.

"Vice President (Nicolas) Maduro estimates that the time it could take President Chavez to return is within weeks. But we haven't wanted to fix an exact timeframe for the president's recuperation," Villegas told reporters on the sidelines of a 60-nation summit in Chile.

He read a statement that went beyond past government reports in providing additional information about Chavez's Dec. 11 surgery, but didn't describe the newest treatment. While refusing to release many details about the president's cancer, authorities in the past have reported on specific treatments, including radiation and chemotherapy.

"Forty-five days after carrying out a complex surgical intervention for the removal of a malignant lesion in the pelvis, with severe, acute complications, the patient's general evolution is favorable," Villegas said, reading the statement.

"At this time, the serious respiratory infection has been overcome, although a certain degree of respiratory deficiency persists and is being duly treated," Villegas said.

After that improvement, Villegas said, "systemic medical treatment for the fundamental illness began to be applied as a complement to the surgery."

Villegas also criticized Spain's leading newspaper El Pais, which was forced to reprint its Thursday edition after discovering that its front-page exclusive photograph supposedly showing an ailing Chavez being treated in Cuba was a fake.

The newspaper apologized to its readers for the mistake and said it was investigating how the photo made its way into the paper.

"But who has apologized to Chavez or his family?" Villegas said.

"In Venezuela we've seen a phenomenon where even the atheists are praying for Chavez," he said. "In Uruguay, President Mujica, who's not a believer, organized a Mass and prayed for Chavez."

Chavez hasn't appeared or spoken publicly since before the operation.

Maduro said early Saturday after meeting with Chavez in Cuba that the ailing president is now "in the best moment we've seen him in these days of struggle" following the surgery.

Maduro spoke on state television after returning from Havana to Venezuela, and before he traveled to Chile for the summit.

"We're taking a message prepared by the president, and we're going to turn it over to heads of state who attend the CELAC summit. He makes fundamental proposals," Maduro said, adding that the message was in Chavez's handwriting.

Maduro said Chavez also sent a message for Venezuelans, including that he was "very optimistic" about his treatment. Maduro said Chavez is "hanging on to Christ and to life."

Chavez has undergone repeated surgeries, chemotherapy and radiation treatment for an unspecified type of pelvic cancer. He has undergone much of his treatment in Cuba.

The 58-year-old president won re-election in October, and lawmakers indefinitely put off his inauguration earlier this month in a decision that was condemned by opponents but upheld by the Supreme Court.

The vice president said that Chavez "has reviewed and evaluated reports on different areas and has made decisions."

He said Chavez evaluated the country's economic situation and budget and made decisions about gold reserves, funding for public housing projects and "social investments and economic development." Maduro didn't give more details but said the actions approved by the president were intended to "guarantee the country's economic growth, infrastructure, housing."

Maduro said that one of the documents signed by Chavez dealt with the selection of his socialist party's candidates for mayoral elections later this year. The vice president showed the signature in red ink on one of the documents.

Prostate cancer cells thrive on stress | Science Codex

Prostate cancer patients have increased levels of stress and anxiety; however, several recent studies have found that men who take drugs that interfere with the stress hormone adrenaline have a lower incidence of prostate cancer. In this issue of the Journal of Clinical Investigation George Kulik and colleagues at Wake Forest University examined the relationship between stress and cancer progression in a mouse model of prostate cancer. Kulik and colleagues found that mice that had been subjected to stress (exposed to the scent of a predator) exhibited a significantly reduced response to a drug that induces cancer cell death compared to their unstressed counterparts. Administration of adrenaline also blocked cancer cell death. Conversely, drugs that inhibited adrenaline signaling ablated the effect of stress on prostate cancer. These findings suggest that beta-blockers, which are used for the treatment of high blood pressure and block the effects of adrenaline, could increase the efficacy of anti-cancer therapies. In a companion commentary, Anil Sood and colleagues at MD Anderson Cancer Center discuss additional studies that will be required to move these findings from bench to bedside.

Petrol bombs fly again as Northern Irish flag protests continue

BELFAST (Reuters) - Northern Irish police were pelted by petrol bombs for the first time in almost two weeks on Friday after more protests at the removal of the British flag from Belfast City Hall.

Masked youths clashed with police on the streets of east Belfast on an almost nightly basis for six weeks after local councillors voted to end a century-old tradition of flying the flag, enraging some pro-British loyalists.

The worst violence had calmed in recent days and most demonstrations on Friday passed off without major incident. But later in the evening, some people hurled stones, bottles and petrol bombs at police. There were no arrests or injuries, a police spokesman said.

The violence has been the most sustained in the British-ruled province since a 1998 peace deal ended 30 years of conflict between Catholic Irish nationalists seeking union with Ireland and Protestant loyalists determined to remain part of the United Kingdom.

UK court identifies Barclays staff named in rate probe

LONDON (Reuters) - A number of Barclays current and past executives are on a shortlist of individuals named in regulatory documents referring to the bank's attempted rigging of global benchmark interest rates, court documents released on Friday showed.

The list includes the head of Barclays' investment bank, Rich Ricci, who has led a reputation-based review of all of Barclays' investment banking activities following the scandal, which saw the bank fined $453 million by United States and British authorities.

The list also includes finance director Chris Lucas, former Chief Executive Bob Diamond, former chief operating officer Jerry del Missier, and former compliance head Stephen Morse.

A British judge ordered the bank to reveal their identities during a preliminary hearing for a test case on the mis-selling of interest rate swaps brought by a residential care home operator.

A longer list of 104 individuals who were named in court papers was released on Thursday after the judge denied their request for anonymity. The shorter list of 25, released on Friday, names those specifically referred to in regulatory documents referring to Libor manipulation.

Twenty-four of the 25 had requested anonymity - the exception being former Barclays trader Jay Merchant, who went on to become head of swaps trading at UBS before leaving his position last August amid federal scrutiny of his activities while at Barclays.

None of those named is necessarily implicated in any wrongdoing.

Guardian Care Homes alleges Barclays mis-sold interest rate hedging products based on Libor (London interbank offered rate) in a case that is shining a light on those involved in the bank's interest rate-setting process.

Texas teachers, foundations converge on Capitol

AUSTIN, Texas (AP) -- Hundreds of teachers gathered at the state Capitol on Thursday to urge Texas lawmakers to roll back $5.4 billion in public education cuts imposed two years ago, while nearby a coalition of foundations pushed for reforms without necessarily spending more money.

Members of the Texas Classroom Teachers Association fanned out for a lobbying full-court press, meeting with state senators and representatives for their home districts and explaining how the funding loss has prompted layoffs and wage freezes, larger class sizes and pre-kindergarten cuts. Some teachers said janitorial staff cutbacks have forced them to take out their own classroom garbage, while others complained the loss of aides and librarians has them trying to be two places at once.

"We need to stop putting Band-Aids on things and pretending like that's enough," said Janie Baszile, a teacher for 34 years in the Galena Park Independent School District in greater Houston. She led a small group from the area on a trek to see nine lawmakers.

The Texas Legislature, facing a $27 billion budget deficit prompted by a sluggish economy in 2011, voted to slash $5.4 billion from public schools and educational grant programs. The state's economic outlook is brighter now, but budget drafts in both the House and Senate for 2014-15 failed to restore the cuts.

One of the offices Baszile's group visited was that of Rep. Craig Eiland, a Texas City Democrat who was not in. Instead, staff member Ann Drescher listened to the group talk about deemphasizing high-stakes standardized testing and improving state classroom discipline mechanisms.

"Is there any talk about funding?" teacher Ruby Tanguma, finally asked. "That really hurt us." Tanguma is a specialist for students in second- to fifth-grade who need extra instruction in reading and math in the Bay City Independent School District.

Drescher said draft budgets didn't restore the cuts. "But there's still time before the final version is passed," she added.

Meanwhile, Sen. Dan Patrick, a Houston Republican who chairs the Senate Public Education Committee, appeared at a press conference in another corner of the Capitol with Texans Deserve Great Schools, a new group of policy experts and civic leaders. The coalition said it wants to apply other states' successful education policy to Texas.

It believes the state is adequately funding schools but should distribute that money better, said Caprice Young, vice president of education for the Houston-based Laura and John Arnold Foundation, which seeks to "minimize injustice in our society."

Texans Deserve Great Schools wants to lift the current cap of 215 charter schools licensed to operate statewide and believes public funding should go to cover charter facilities costs. It also wants to increase the number of Texas students who can earn school credit by taking courses online.

Additionally, the group is seeking to strengthen existing "parent trigger" laws so as to allow parents to petition to shut down a failing school after just two years. It further believes parents should have the option to send their children to the best public schools and not be "trapped by their zip code."

But the coalition stops short of endorsing voucher proposals that would let families use public money allotted for their children on private schools. "We're really about public schools," Young said.

Patrick has proposed expanding school vouchers, arguing that families who are wealthy enough buy homes in areas with quality school districts ? while their low-income counterparts are trapped in poor-performing districts.

"We must have empowerment and we must have flexibility," Patrick said Thursday.

Many of the teachers at the Capitol said they oppose vouchers because private schools can turn away students deemed undesirable, meaning struggling kids will be stuck in public schools that will lose funding as their classmates bolt.

Vouchers supporters say they could increase teacher pay because there may be added demand for top educators. But Teresa Koehler, a 30-year teaching veteran in Clear Creek Independent School District, near League City, said "the key word there is 'may.'"

"In the past, what they say will happen has not happened," she said.

Three people shot at Houston-area community college, police say ...

Three people on campus at Lone Star College were injured in what may have been an argument that escalated. Nearby schools went into lockdown as parents waited to pick up their kids. NBC's Janet Shamlian reports.

By Jeff Black, Staff Writer, NBC News

Three people were wounded Tuesday afternoon when gunfire erupted at a Houston-area community college, law enforcement officials said.

Authorities confirmed at a news conference ?that two "persons of interest" were involved and wounded in an altercation at the North Harris campus of Lone Star College. A maintenance worker at the college was also shot in the leg during the crossfire, said Maj. Armando Tello, acting sheriff for the Harris County Sheriff's Office. School officials say the worker, in his mid-50s, was in stable condition.

Police later said Carlton Berry, 22. was charged with aggravated assault. He remained in the hospital early Wednesday, Harris County Sheriff's Office Director of Public Affairs Alan Bernstein told NBC News.

Police did not identify the second "person of interest."

Police said a fourth person, a female with a student ID, was transported from the scene to the hospital, for an unspecified "medical condition."

The shooting happened outside in a courtyard between an academic building and a library, Richard Carpenter with the Lone Star College System said. Police were dispatched at 12:51 p.m. CT and were on the scene within two minutes, according to Tello.?Police confirmed a handgun was involved, but could not provide more information because the incident?remains?under investigation.

Several federal officials have said the incident was gang-related, but the exact nature of the relationship remained unclear.

Authorities say the shooting at a Texas community college was the result of an altercation between two people.

The school said on Twitter that the shooting occurred at about 12:31 p.m. Carpenter said the campus will reopen Wednesday.

Live aerial video taken from NBC station KPRC-TV?showed emergency crews moving two people on stretchers into ambulances.

Police officers in SWAT gear were shown on the video entering buildings on the campus and bringing out students.

A spokesperson for Ben Taub General Hospital confirmed to NBC News that two patients from the shooting had been treated there. A?Houston Northwest Medical Center spokesperson said it had two patients from the Lone Star College incident. Neither hospital would release more information about the patients.

Witness Amanda Vasquez told KPRC she was in English class with about 25 other students when she heard shots fired, she thought in the hallway. She said she got under her desk, while other students ran out of the classroom.?

"We closed the door and we put the table against the door," Vasquez said. "And we were hiding and I was just trying to call my mom to let her know I was OK."

Police came in after about 30 minutes and said they could come out, she said.

Jed Young, a spokesman for the college system, told The Associated Press that a "shelter-in-place order" was issued at the college due to reports of a shooter on campus.?Students, faculty and staff were advised by the college website to take immediate shelter where they were. The school later said it was on lockdown.?

Lone Star College is a community college system based in the Houston region and has six campuses associated with it.

Lone Star's North Harris campus is 20 miles north of Houston in unincorporated Harris County. The campus has roughly 19,000 students.

China recovering from 'soft landing'

DAVOS, Switzerland (AP) ? The head of China's National Economic Research Institute says his country's economy is now recovering from its "soft landing" and that the big challenge in 2013 will be to prevent it overheating.

Fan Gang told a session on China's growth prospects at the World Economic Forum Wednesday that the world's second-largest economy should grow faster in 2013 than it did last year.

China posted growth of 7.8 percent last year, its weakest performance since the 1990s.

Fan said that in 2013 China could grow between 8 percent to 8.5 percent.

Islamists win seats in Jordan's parliament

(AP) ? Islamists and other government critics won around a quarter of the seats in Jordan's newly empowered parliament, according to initial results released Thursday, a surprisingly strong showing despite a boycott by the country's most powerful opposition group.

Loyalists of King Abdullah II will remain in control of the new legislature, however, claiming a majority of the 150 seats up for grabs in Wednesday's parliamentary election. But the presence of at least 37 Islamist and other opposition figures will likely inject a degree of dissent into the assembly, in sharp contrast to the outgoing parliament, which was almost entirely composed of the monarch's supporters.

The government has touted the vote as the start of a democratization process that will see Abdullah, a close U.S.-ally, gradually hand over some of his absolute powers to the legislature. The new parliament will choose the prime minister and be responsible for running the country's day-to-day affairs, powers that used to reside with the king. Foreign policy and security matters ? for now, at least ? remain in the hands of Abdullah.

Initial results released by the Independent Electoral Commission had 18 opposition Islamists winning seats, including two well-known independents. They are not members of the Muslim Brotherhood, the country's largest and most organized opposition group, which boycotted the polls to protest an election law it says favors the king's supporters.

About a dozen leftists affiliated with pan-Arab nationalist groups, who are vocal government critics, also won seats, as did 14 candidates from a moderate Islamist party, comprising devout but somewhat liberal Muslim figures, who ran on their centrist party banner. They are expected to lean toward the opposition rather than the government in the legislature because their known public stances often differed with the state.

Two Brotherhood members who broke ranks with their party to contest the elections have also won, according to nearly final results.

While Abdullah loyalists claimed the majority of the seats, their haul fell far short of their 2010 parliamentary election performance. Final results were expected later Thursday.

The Brotherhood rejected the vote and the outcome, and vowed to keep up street protests and public gatherings in defiance of repeated appeals by Jordan's King Abdullah II to have them join the political process.

"The polls were rigged," said Hamza Mansour, a member of the Brotherhood's political arm, the Islamic Action Front. "Suddenly, the turnout jumped 20 percent in nearly the last three hours of voting, which is impossible by all means."

He rejected suggestions that the group has been sidelined, saying "we are part of the people and we will remain in the street to press our demands for real reforms."

Despite the Brotherhood's complaints, international election observers said there were few issues with the vote.

"The electoral process seemed to be working well with no serious problems," EU Chief Election observer David Martin told reporters late Wednesday. Election officials "performed their tasks well, voters did not face any undue waiting to cast their ballots and most voters seemed to understand the system."

The new parliament will for the first time in Jordan's history elect a prime minister ? a major power-ceding concession by the king in the wake of street protests over the past two years, inspired by Arab Spring uprisings. The protesters, initially led by youth activists and later taken over by the fundamentalist Brotherhood, have demanded more people power and a greater say in politics.

The election commission said 1.3 million Jordanians, or 56.7 percent of nearly 2.3 million people who were registered to vote, had cast their ballots.

Senate to probe FAA approval of 787 battery

12 hrs.

WASHINGTON -- A key U.S. Senate committee will hold a hearing in coming weeks to examine U.S. aviation safety oversight and the Federal Aviation Administration's decision to allow Boeing Co. to use highly flammable lithium-ion batteries on board its new 787 Dreamliner, a congressional aide said on Tuesday.

U.S., Japanese and French authorities are investigating two separate cases in which lithium-ion batteries on board the new airliner failed. One of the batteries sparked a fire in a parked plane in Boston, while the other forced an emergency landing in Japan.

As a result, authorities around the world last week grounded all 50 Boeing 787s.

The Dreamliner, with a list price of $207 million, is the world's newest airliner, a lightweight, advanced carbon-composite design that has more electrical power than any other aircraft and uses 20 percent less fuel.

"Certainly the issues of FAA certification will be a key component of the aviation safety oversight hearing we're planning," an aide to the Senate Commerce, Science and Transportation Committee told Reuters in an email.

The aide, who was not authorized to speak publicly, said committee chairman Senator John Rockefeller was "following the situation surrounding the Dreamliner and FAA's task force closely and he thinks the FAA and (Department of Transportation)are examining the issue carefully."

The House Transportation and Infrastructure Committee is also keeping a close eye on the 787 investigations and the issue of FAA oversight, congressional aides said, although no formal hearings were planned at this point.

Boeing officials have briefed both oversight committees and other key lawmakers about the matter, a Boeing spokesman said.

The Senate committee had already been planning to conduct "substantial and aggressive oversight" of aviation safety during the first quarter, but would now look closely at the 787 incidents and FAA oversight as part of that process, the committee aide said.

Problems with the 787's lithium-ion battery have sparked questions about why the FAA in 2007 granted Boeing a "special condition" to allow use of the batteries on the plane, despite the fact that they are highly flammable and hard to extinguish if they catch fire.

Boeing designed a special system that was supposed to contain any such fire and vent toxic gasses outside the plane, but the two recent incidents have raised questions about whether that was a good decision.

It remains unclear what caused the batteries to fail, but when it announced plans to ground U.S.-based 787s, the FAA said both battery failures released flammable chemicals, heat damage and smoke - all of which could affect critical systems on the plane and spark a fire in the electrical compartment.

The FAA has said it will keep the 787s grounded until airlines demonstrate that the battery system is safe and complies with safety regulations.?

New Mexico Programs Designed for the Adult Continuing Education ...

Returning to school as an adult continuing education unm learner can be a daunting and intimidating process. The good news is, you are not alone. According to the American Council on Education, adult learners (over the age of 25) make up nearly 40 percent of the nations higher education student population. Due to many factors, including corporate downsizing and monetary invigoration from Government grants, workers looking to reinvent their careers via adult continuing education unm are finding more and more opportunities and services than ever before.

In partnership with New Mexico colleges and universities like unm continuing education, these Government grants are creating a renewed focus on workforce development. Specifically, continuing education unm services offered to new mexico continuing education students lies along the skills building spectrum from resume writing tips to art history courses to professional development classes like real estate licensure. These are only a few of the many services offered to continuing education unm students.

Programs and access to these services are expected to keep improving for continuing education unm learners. In a recent research paper commissioned by the American Council on Education, higher education leaders are being asked to implement new ideas that will better meet the needs of the post traditional (continuing education unm) learner. The aim, this paper contends, is to instill new life and knowledge into our economy and workforce.

Former players urge Miller be put in Hall of Fame

(AP) ? Baseball players urged that Marvin Miller be put in the Hall of Fame as they spoke Monday night during a memorial for the union leader.

In an auditorium filled with Hall of Famers, dozens of retired and current players, baseball officials, agents and labor lawyers, 13 speakers praised the former baseball union head, who helped players gain free agency in the 1970s and created the path to multimillion-dollar salaries. Miller died in November at 95.

"It is a travesty he is not in the Hall of Fame," former major league player and manager Buck Martinez said during the two-hour program.

Miller has been turned down five times by various Hall of Fame committees that considered baseball executives.

Jim Bouton, who entered the majors in 1962, was critical that Bowie Kuhn, baseball's commissioner from 1969-84, is in the Hall but Miller has been kept out.

"I think Bowie Kuhn was 0 for 67" against Miller, Bouton said.

Miller is next eligible to appear on a Hall ballot this December.

Former stars Dave Winfield and Joe Morgan were among those who spoke before a crowd of about 450 at New York University School of Law's Tishman Auditorium. Reggie Jackson, Keith Hernandez and MLB executive vice president Rob Manfred were in the audience along the head of the Japanese baseball players' association and George Cohen, director of the Federal Mediation and Conciliation Service.

Winfield, who used free agency to sign a record-breaking contract after the 1980 season, said Miller taught him life lessons he still thinks of. Winfield addressed the five active players in the audience, who included Andrew Bailey, Craig Breslow and Micah Owings.

"Anything you do in life, know where you've come from, where you are and where you're going," Winfield said. "Know how you got to where you are today."

A former economist for the United Steelworkers Union, Miller spent 16 1/2 years as executive director of the Major League Players Association, starting in 1966.

During Miller's tenure, the average major league salary increased from $19,000 to $241,000. It was $3.2 million last year.

"Every time somebody signs one of these wonderful contracts, and there are so many of them out there, I think before they get the first check they should have to write an essay on Marvin Miller," said Rusty Staub, a big leaguer from 1963-85.

Current union head Michael Weiner hosted the tribute, which included video clips of Miller reminiscing. Players spoke in order of when they made their big league debuts.

"We could have searched 100 years and wouldn't have found a more perfect person for our situation," said Morgan, a Hall of Fame second baseman who played in the majors from 1963-84.

Donald Fehr, who served as Miller's general counsel from 1977-82 and then headed the union from 1983-09, said he could read Miller's mood by what drink he ordered at lunch: a Tom Collins signaled a happy mood, a martini meant he was perplexed and Old Grand-Dad Bourbon was a sign of problems.

"The reason I think he is remembered as he is, is that the baseball players' association became a symbol, it became a symbol of what a union could be if it was run right." Fehr said.
