It likely doesn?t take a rocket engineer to find out that mobile technology and mobile computing will be here stay. Smartphones, tablet PCs, and notebooks are typical the rage, plus they are improving and more powerful each day, with increased apps and features to please a persons. And then we are very mindful that Google and Apple are blazing the trail, and the ones companies do rather effectively with shareholders equity and quarterly profits. Luckily, they are getting a wide range of other component companies along for that ride.

In the September issue of Forbes, September 27, 2010 to become exact there seemed to be an extremely interesting article inside the Makers and Breakers-Money and Investment section, that was very worthwhile, and described which companies were breaking speed records in traveling with a laptop. The title of the article was ?Brainy Smartphone Stocks,? and it brought up companies like MIPS technologies, and Intel as brilliant stocks to get because they were behind such products within the Iphone 3gs and iPad plus the behind the curtain systems which run touch-screens and touch-pads.

Obviously, those are technologies which make mobile computing today as great since it is. Often, this doesn?t happen sound right to purchase a mobile tech company which includes its brand name about the device, since the majority of of these stocks have already got an important boost using their original sales. Since the industry matures, obviously it will have more competition reducing price points, therefore, less profit perhaps as the market gets saturated. It is a personal basic industry curve, so no secrets there.

Nevertheless, many of the component makers that make chips and things which are inside of the notebooks, laptops, tablets, and smartphone?s is going to be approximately full production, selling to everyone, to wit every one of the companies who manufacture those end products and hang their brand names on them. These businesses don?t have a choice but to acquire the chips in the makers. That means long-term robust sales continues.

The length of time will such sales continue? Well, I doubt if the people of the world will forfeit their appetite for that freedom that mobile computing offers them. Put differently, until each human on earth carries a device with this type, itrrrs likely that someone will almost certainly must carry out the chips for them.

Cypriots fear run on banks as branches prepare to reopen after almost two weeks

NICOSIA, Cyprus - Anguished Cypriots fear a run on banks when branches on the tiny tax haven reopen for first time in almost two weeks on Thursday.

Since March 16, customers have only been able to withdraw limited amounts of cash from ATMs after banks closed to allow Cypriot officials and European leaders to hammer out a 10-billion euro ($13-billion) rescue meant to avert a chaotic national bankruptcy.

The banks in Cyprus are set to reopen after 11 days of being closed as a measure to prevent a run on deposits during the country's financial crisis. Millions in cash is on the move tonight as people camped out in expectation. ITV's Emma Murphy reports

However, some believe the deal will instead push the country further into economic crisis as thousands of bank employees lose their jobs. The country's unemployment rate is about 14 percent.

Under the terms of the EU bailout, accounts of more than 100,000 euros ($128,460) at the islands' two biggest banks will be frozen. Depositors with accounts at Laiki Bank, which is being liquidated, won't get paid for years and won't get all of their money back. CNBC sources estimate those with bank accounts in Laiki above 100,000 euros could lose 40 to 70 percent of their deposits.

Deposits above 100,000 euros with the Bank of Cyprus will be frozen and 40 percent of each account will be converted into bank stock. Accounts in both banks with balances under 100,000 euros will be fully protected.

Many Cypriots say they do not feel reassured by the bailout deal and are expected to besiege banks as soon as they open their doors Thursday.

"We have an uncertain future in in Cyprus," said Chris Sofroniou, as he waited in an ATM line in Nicosia. "There's uncertainty in our future in our children, and we are very, very disappointed with the European Union. We are being treated like third-class citizens and we are very, very angry."

A spokeswoman for the island's central bank said banks would not reopen until 12 p.m. local time (6 a.m. ET) on Thursday, according to Reuters.

The spokeswoman said banks would open their doors between midday and 6 p.m. (1600 GMT). The Cypriot authorities are expected later on Wednesday to detail the capital controls they plan to impose to prevent a flight of funds.?

The last-minute deal was reached Monday, just hours before the EU was due to cut off the country?s financial lifelines.

The agreement ended a week of protests in Cyprus, long lines at cash machines, and a tense geopolitical standoff after European officials made the unprecedented demand that ordinary Cypriot savers share in the cost of any bank bailout.

Cyprus promoted itself as an offshore financial haven by making depositing money there attractive to foreigners. The result? A financial sector that dwarfed the rest of the economy.

Without that deal, Cyprus? banks would have collapsed, dragging down the economy and potentially pushing it out of the euro zone.

'Extremely unfair'
While the country?s president, Nicos Anastasiades, called the deal ?painful? but essential, Nobel laureate economist Christopher Pissarides said the bailout was ?extremely unfair to the little guy.?

?For the first time in the euro zone, depositors are (being) asked to bail out failing banks," he said. "Now that used to be the case in the 1930s, especially United States (and) caused big bank runs. It has been decided since then that we shouldn?t allow that to happen again.?

As Cyprus celebrates its Independence Day, the ?government is defending the last-minute bailout deal it's negotiated with the European Union. This means shutting down the country's second biggest bank, with big savers facing ?losses. ?ITV's Emma Murphy reports.

Finance Minister Michael Sarris said that the government was implementing measures to halt a run on the banks when they opened on Thursday, although he did not go into detail, according to Reuters.

It isn?t only bankers and the wealthy who are angry, however. On Wednesday, around 3,000 high school students protested the plan agreed to with the European Union, International Monetary Fund and European Central Bank.

"They've just got rid of all our dreams, everything we've worked for, everything we've achieved up until now, what our parents have achieved," a student named Thomas told Reuters.?

So as Cyprus waited to see what Thursday would bring, citizens mourned what they saw as the end of an era.?

?It?s the destruction of the country,? Cypriot Aristos Sardi said. ?Who they think they are? For this country the colonial days finished in the 1960s.?

?I am heartbroken,? he added.

Facebook expands targeted ads to News Feed

Facebook is expanding the advertising system that lets marketers tailor messages to users of the No. 1 social network based on their browsing history, in the company's latest step to refine its ad business.

So far, the system has been used to target graphical display ads on the right side of a Facebook user's page, based on websites visited in the past, such as for products or potential vacation destinations.

The move announced on Tuesday will incorporate this system, called Facebook Exchange, to the ads in Facebook's News Feed.

It ties together two of the most significant innovations that Facebook has made in the past year to its advertising business, which accounts for roughly 84 percent of the company's revenue.

Marketers last year welcomed the launch of Facebook Exchange as it provided a common online advertising technique long missing on the social network.

Ads that appear directly within the Facebook News Feed are considered crucial to its future business prospects since they can be seen on mobile devices such as smartphones. About two-thirds of Facebook users accessed the site on a mobile device in December.

Facebook said the Facebook Exchange system will initially be available for newsfeed ads that appear on desktop PCs but not on mobile devices.

"Desktop is more in line with what FBX (Facebook Exchange) has been doing effectively in the right hand side. And we also find that desktop is the place where more people convert from seeing direct-response ads," said Facebook spokeswoman Elisabeth Diana.

The company is testing the new service with a limited set of partners, with plans for broader availability in the coming weeks.

A urinal gaming system is coming to the men's rooms of Coca-Cola Park in the Lehigh Valley.

PHILADELPHIA ? A steady stream will help Lehigh Valley IronPig fans stay entertained and learn about prostate health while answering nature?s call at the ballpark.

The Phillies? AAA-minor league team will introduce the first ?urinal gaming system? when the season kicks off at Coca-Cola Park next week.

Screens installed above urinals will display the game, which is a downhill snowmobile competition. The user?s flow controls the virtual snowmobiler as he tries to hit penguins on the route ? directing the stream left or right will move the driver in that direction.

?It?s just like a joystick on a video game,? said Brian Downs, Director of Media Relations for Lehigh Valley Health Network. The health system will be advertising on the game?s screens.

Downs says his team had a few laughs when they were approached to be a sponsor, but quickly decided it would be a great way to educate men about prostate health.

?You kind of have a built-in audience and an opportunity to create an awareness about the importance of prostate health,? he said.

The game screens will display information from the health system when the urinal is not in use. When a guy walks up to use the urinal, the information will go away and switch into game mode.

?There?s a lot of ways you can market different programs and healthcare. In this case, it made a lot of sense,? Downs says.

A urinal gaming system is coming to the men's rooms in a minor league baseball stadium in Pennsylvania.

In the U.S., prostate cancer is the second leading cause of cancer deaths among men, behind lung cancer. One in six men will be diagnosed with prostate cancer in their lifetime, according to the American Cancer Society.

IronPigs spokesman Jon Schaeffer says the "pee" game will be installed in four men?s rooms inside the 10,100-seat ballpark ? one per restroom. Anyone using the urinal can play the game and it doesn't cost extra.

Players will be given a score at the end of their game. The high scorers will be displayed in real-time on video boards inside the ballpark. Players will also be ranked and recognized on the team's website.

"Our fans are always looking for the next big thing and these 'X-Stream Games' are another example of our commitment to providing an unparalleled entertainment experience in all aspects of Coca-Cola Park, including our restrooms," IronPigs General Manager Kurt Landes said in a statement.

The urinal gaming system is already in use at bars in the United Kingdom, but has never been installed in a sporting venue.

The system will debut with the downhill snowmobile game, but that six to 12 others will be swapped in as the season progresses. Schaeffer says the team has gotten a huge response from fans so far ? even before the system's debut.

?The feedback that we?ve gotten, it?s been overwhelmingly positive," Schaeffer said. He added that the team's Twitter feed has been blowing up over the announcement.

Aside from the fun, Downs hopes the system will remind men to get a checkup and hopefully save lives by catching cancer early.

?The idea is that you see the health network and remember to talk with your doctor, especially if you have issues. And at least keep it in the back of their mind.?

US hands prison over to Afghans

BAGRAM, Afghanistan (AP) ? The U.S. military gave control of its last detention facility in Afghanistan to Kabul on Monday, a year after the two sides initially agreed on the transfer.

The handover of Parwan Detention Facility ends a bitter chapter in American relations with Afghanistan's mercurial president, Hamid Karzai, who demanded control of the prison as a matter of national sovereignty.

It took place just a few hours before U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry flew into Afghanistan on an unannounced visit to see Karzai amid concerns the Afghan president may be jeopardizing progress in the war against extremism with anti-American rhetoric.

The dispute over the detention facility fueled acrimony between the two countries in recent months and also threw a pall over the ongoing negotiations for a bilateral security agreement that would govern the presence of U.S. forces in Afghanistan after 2014.

Top U.S. commander in Afghanistan Gen. Joseph Dunford handed over Parwan, located near the U.S.-run Bagram military base north of Kabul, at a ceremony there after signing an agreement with Afghan Defense Minister Bismullah Khan Mohammadi.

"The transfer of the detention facility is an important part of the overall transition of security lead to Afghan National Security Forces. This ceremony highlights an increasingly confident, capable, and sovereign Afghanistan," Dunford said.

An initial agreement to hand over Parwan was signed a year ago, but efforts to follow through on it constantly stumbled over American concerns that the Afghan government would release prisoners that it considered dangerous.

A key hurdle was a ruling by an Afghan judicial panel holding that administrative detention, the practice of holding someone without formal charges, violated the country's laws. The U.S. argued that international law allowed administrative detentions and also argued that it could not risk turning over some high-value detainees to the notoriously corrupt Afghan court system.

An initial deadline for the full handover passed last September and another earlier this month.

The formula for how the two sides resolved this dilemma has not been made public. Officials say that the Afghan government will be able to invoke a procedure that ensures prisoners considered dangerous will not be released from the detention center. According to a senior U.S. official in Washington, the agreement also includes a provision that allows the U.S. and Kabul to work together to resolve any differences. The official lacked authorization to discuss the details of the agreement publicly and spoke on condition of anonymity.

Ashraf Ghani Ahmadzai, who heads the Afghan transition commission and helped broker the deal, said the "transfer is an outcome of a long and sustained dialogue between the government of Afghanistan and the international community. A year ago we reached agreement in principle on the transfer but intense discussion in the last month is culminated in a principled agreement."

He said Karzai had made "transferring authority form international forces to our national forces as a key marker" of his administration.

The detention center houses about 3,000 prisoners and the majority are already under Afghan control. The United States had not handed over about 100, and some of those under American authority do not have the right to a trial because the U.S. considers them part of an ongoing conflict.

There are also about three dozen non-Afghan detainees, including Pakistanis and other nationals that will remain in American hands. The exact number and nationality of those detainees has never been made public.

"They are not the priority of the Afghan government so the Americans can keep them for the time being. Our priority are the Afghan detainees," Afghan Defense Ministry spokesman Gen. Zahir Azimi said.

He added that under the agreement, the U.S.-led military coalition has 96 hours to hand over any new detainees it picks up on the battlefield to Afghan authorities.

A new agreement, or memorandum of understanding, was signed at the ceremony by Dunford and Khan, but the U.S. military said it will not be made public. The agreement supplants one signed last March, which had been made public.

The U.S. military said in a statement that the new agreement "affirms their mutual commitment to the lawful and humane treatment of detainees and their intention to protect the people of Afghanistan and coalition forces," an apparent reference to the release of detainees deemed to be dangerous.

The handover should also open the way for a resumption of talks for a bilateral security agreement that would govern the presence of U.S. forces in Afghanistan after 2014.

It is part of an ongoing effort to gradually shift control of the country's security to the Afghans as the U.S. and allies move toward the full withdrawal of combat troops by the end of 2014.

There are about 100,000 coalition troops in Afghanistan, including about 66,000 from the United States. American officials have made no final decision on how many troops might remain in Afghanistan after 2014, although they have said as many as many as 12,000 U.S. and coalition forces could remain.

The U.S. started to hold detainees at Bagram Air Field in early 2002. For several years, prisoners were kept at a former Soviet aircraft machine plant converted into a lockup.

In 2009, the U.S. opened a new detention facility next door. The number of detainees incarcerated at that prison, renamed the Parwan Detention Facility, went from about 1,100 in September 2010 to more than 3,000.

After Monday's handover, it was renamed the Afghan National Detention Facility at Parwan and the U.S. military said it would provide the Afghan army with advisers and $39 million in funding.

The United States has spent about a quarter of a billion dollars to build the Bagram facility along with Kabul's main prison located in the capital.

Morsi issues ominous warning to Egypt opposition

Egyptian President Mohamed Morsi threatened on Sunday to take unspecified steps to "protect this nation" after violent demonstrations against his Muslim Brotherhood, using vague but severe language that the opposition said heralded a crackdown.

In remarks following clashes outside the Brotherhood's Cairo headquarters on Friday, Morsi warned that? would be taken against any politicians shown to be involved in what he described as violence and rioting.

"If I am forced to do what is required to protect this nation, then I will do it. And I fear that I might be on the verge of doing it," Morsi said in a statement. He did not elaborate.

Morsi has faced increasing anger since the Brotherhood propelled him to power in a June election, and several spates of protest have turned into violent riots.

The president's opponents accuse him and the Brotherhood of seeking to dominate the post-Hosni Mubarak era and resorting to undemocratic police powers two years after autocrat Mubarak was brought down by popular protests.

The brotherhood accuses its secularist opponents of stirring trouble to seize power they could not win at the ballot box, and says the relentless civil unrest is wrecking efforts to salvage an economy driven to its knees by uncertainty.

"They are very scary comments," said Khaled Dawoud, a spokesman for the National Salvation Front (NSF), an alliance of non-Islamist parties formed late last year to oppose Morsi.

"I can see language that is heading towards taking some suppressive measures," he added.

Dozens of people were hurt on Friday when several thousand supporters and opponents of the Brotherhood fought near the Islamist group's headquarters.

RUNNING OUT OF PATIENCE

Dawoud said the NSF was not behind those protests, but added that some of its members may have decided to take part.

Morsi said everyone had the right to peaceful protest, but "what is happening now has nothing to do with the revolution".

"I urge all political forces not to provide any political cover for acts of violence and rioting. I will not be happy if investigations prove the guilt of some politicians," he said in the remarks, which were published on his Twitter account.

"Some are using the media to incite violence and those whose involvement is proven will not escape punishment," he added. "Anyone who takes part in incitement is a partner in the crime."

He also spoke of attempts to portray the state as weak but said these had failed: "The apparatus of the state are recovering and can deter any law breaker," he added.

Exactly what new steps Morsi is considering became the subject of speculation.

In late January, he declared a state of emergency rule in three cities near the Suez Canal to combat a wave of violence there. A declaration of a state of emergency elsewhere is unlikely, said Yasser El-Shimy, Egypt analyst for the International Crisis Group, adding arrests were more probable.

"My impression is that Morsi and the Brotherhood in general have had it with the violence that is taking place and they are running out of patience," he said.

"This is definitely the strictest he has spoken regarding the rioting," he added. "Now Morsi feels there is enough public opinion on his side to justify taking stricter measures."

One recent source of tension between Morsi and the opposition was his call for parliamentary elections based on a controversial election law. The vote, due to begin in late April, has been postponed by a court ruling and it is now not clear when it will happen.

Morsi's political supporters and opponents signed a document agreeing to renounce violence following riots in late January.

Morsi's opponents say they are committed to peaceful protest and have also accused the Brotherhood of using violence and inciting tension in the street. The Brotherhood says the opposition has done little to rein in its followers.

From the Editor's Desk: Whoops - I bought a BlackBerry

We've reached one of those crossroads in which we've got all sorts of things to talk about, but not a whole lot to show for it, and it's as frustrating for us as as writers as it is for you as readers.

We could go on all day about the HTC One. (And, no, we're not done poring over it just yet, so expect a few more features this week.) We could talk till the cows come home about the Galaxy S4. But the fact of the matter is -- at least for those of us here in the States -- you can't actually buy one yet. Europe's getting the HTC One this week. We've still got a month (more or less) before the Galaxy S4 goes on sale anywhere -- and remember that we have no hard and firm dates from any U.S. operators yet. 

Point is, this job is so much more fun (and easier, too), when we all have our hands in the honey pot, getting sticky together. (Ed. Note: Ewwwww. Gross. Ed. Note 2: You just put an editor's note in a first-person editor's column. What the hell, Phil?) Here's to hoping we all get sexy slabs of aluminum and plastic sooner rather than later.

OK, I do have one new phone on my desk this week that anyone else can have, too. I bought my first BlackBerry.

The goal in science is not to read literature, it?s to do something with this literature, the works of others, to build on it (or re-build while being aware of it). To do so, you need to have the information you read available for your own works.

One interesting way to help you remember and work with the information you read (and create) is to use a topic notebook. It contains all the information you have read about a (series) of topics and your own thoughts about it.

To be useful, it must have the following functions:

• clear structure ? You have to find quickly what you search for, this includes:
  • the overall structure (the ?notebook? itself), e.g., the way the topics and subtopics are ordered, and
  • the ?pages?, e.g., the information about each topic.
• absolutely clear source information ? Note that plagiarism kills careers and that there is no excuse for sloppy research.
• quick and easy to find, enter, edit, etc. ? You will use it a lot, working with it should be a breeze.
• easy to create derivative works from it ? E.g., using it as the basis for a paper or a book (correctly cited!).

Another topic notebook, this one about conducting research. As each cell has retained the source information it?s easy to check where the information came from.

Personally, I highly recommend Circus Ponies Notebook for this purpose, as it fulfills these requirements perfectly (for me):

• clear structure ? The notebook metaphor makes it easy to work with different topics, while the outliner pages make it very easy to deal with lots of information on little space. You can use multiple notebook or one notebook for different topics, create sections, and the like.
• absolutely clear source information ? If you tag each outliner cell with the source information (select all and assign the source information, e.g., miller_1995, as keyword) you have the source information unobtrusively available at all times as it sticks to the information.
• quick and easy to find, enter, edit, etc. ? In contrast to a wiki you can quickly type text into the cells, change the outline by drag and drop, etc.
• easy to create derivative works from it ? You can copy and paste relevant outline cells to another notebook (careful which kind of copy & paste you use, use the one that preserves the keyword/source tag information), using the information as LEGO? building blocks for your own work (when writing, show the keywords (cmd + k) to know which works you need to cite).

However, this is only one solution and there are probably other programs with which you can do this as well. The concrete program is not that important ? the function it fulfills is.

You might want to keep the following things in mind if you decide to keep a topic notebook:

• Take only what you need ? ? The goal of a topic notebook is not to become a verbatim copy of all the works you have read, but to collect the relevant information. Relevant for your work. So you have to set the focus and you have to select from what you are reading.
• ? but preserve the context ? When you select information, make sure that you preserve the context of that information. No matter how strongly you break up a text you read, make sure you know later what the information meant ? based on what you write down! Don?t assume you remember it five years in the future! The notebook should externalize your memory, so make sure it is correct. For example, if an author lists three major influences and you are only interested in one, copy the information about the one into your topic notebook, but also write down that the author saw this as one of three influences. Otherwise you might later cite this author wrongly (e.g., ?x also saw y as influence to ?? instead of ?x also saw y as one of three influences to ??). You are moving away from the actual source (the paper), you have to, but you also have to preserve the context! Otherwise you misrepresent the author ? something that not only hurts your career but also incurs (rightfully) negative reactions by the authors.
  Pat Thomson wrote an excellent posting on her blog:
  ?So the problem was the cherry-picking of something that was useful to the doctoral researcher, without due recognition of my overall argument. Anyone reading the doctoral thesis would conclude that my work supported the case made in the thesis. In reality of course, the doctoral research was diametrically opposed to my own. All it would have taken for me not to feel seriously misrepresented was for a simple caveat to be made in the text, or even a footnote, which said that my definition and empirical work had been used, although my actual argument was very different from what this thesis was suggesting.? (Thomson, 2013)
  And she concludes with:
  ?The lesson here goes to understanding that pieces of any academic work/text fit within an overall argument. It?s important to understand and acknowledge their place in the whole, as well as their utility as a part.
  I always suggest in workshops and writing courses that when doing literature work and when noting texts, one of the very first things to do is to summarise the argument. I think after writing this post I might add that it?s important to use this information about the argument later when choosing citations. It?s critical when using parts of texts to use the summary of the argument to avoid the situation where textual bits and pieces are used willy-nilly to misrepresent the writer?s overall intention.? (Thomson, 2013)
  Adhere to it. Sloppy research is a waste of time, money, and effort ? yours, your colleagues, the general public. And it hurts your career.
• Part of the context is knowing the quality of the information you collect ? There are huge differences between, e.g., a blogger?s opinion and the results of a meta-analysis. When you collect information make sure you annotate it if it is an assertion (e.g., ?mobiles improve learning?). Be clear about it ? is it an opinion? A theoretical derivation? A study result? A result from a meta-analysis? You can get this information later when you look at the source information, but it?s easier and actually beneficial to do this early on. A large part of being a scientist is being critical ? do you trust this information to build your own works on? Would you use this brick to build a bridge? You are putting the weight of your career on it! Make sure it is strong enough.
• Differentiate between your works and the works of others ? If you have each information unit (e.g., an argument from a paper you deem relevant for your work) tagged with the source information, this is fairly easy. But you can also use, e.g., italics (for verbatim quotes) or colors. While you can work with other people?s ideas/findings like you would with LEGO? bricks, make sure to add your own ideas. Write down your thoughts, ideas, questions. And always be clear what was your idea and what you have found in the literature!
• Trim and reorder regularly ? Over time the topic notebook will grow, so make sure you are not swamped by the amount of information. Outliners are really helpful here, as you can write more general issues in the top level cells and use the child cells to add the detail information. The nice thing about digital collections is that you can quickly copy & paste/move information.
• Avoid duplicating topics/issues within or between notebooks ? Copy & pasting digital information makes it easy to add the same information in different places. Sometimes this makes sense, e.g., an argument that applies to different topics you are interested in. However, be careful not to add the same topic/issue multiple times. For example, if you are interested in ?learning in museums? and ?learning with mobile media?, decide where you put ?mobile media in museums?. Do not add ?museums? as subtopic of ?mobiles? and ?mobile guides? as subtopic of ?museums?. This would become problematic the second you add new information ? you have to add it to them all, which takes time and is likely to produce errors and a disorganized notebook. Use ?see ?? and refer to the place where you put in this information. This is the disadvantage of hierarchical structures (and any notebook is hierarchical), but on the other hand, this hierarchical structure makes it possible to deal with large amounts of information. A network structure (e.g., a Wiki), links (supported in CPN), replicants (supported by some outliners) might avoid this problem, but a non-linear structure makes it very hard to be sure that you have fully scanned the information about a topic.
• Use the appropriate level of detail ? You can go down into the details with tables of findings and exact values, you can also focus on the overall argument, you can do even both (the nice thing about outliners ? you can fold in the information not needed at the moment and keep information aggregated in the higher level cells). But make sure you operate on the right level of detail and/or be able to switch between different levels of detail when needed. Digital makes it easy to copy a lot and get lost in the details quickly. Regular restructuring, trimming and aggregating and summarizing information is needed.
• Do something productive with the topic notebooks ? A topic notebook has no real value of its own. It ensures that you have the information you need for your work in one place, it externalizes your knowledge and allows you to deal with complex information and provides you with easy access to it. Use it regularly and do something with it that advances your career. Blog about it, design studies, conduct experiments, write and publish papers! Organizing should assist your creativity, don?t use your creativity to optimize your organization without getting concrete products from it.

The great thing about a topic notebook is that you have the information you have read available ? immediately and independent of your available cognitive resources. It?s fairly easy to use the topic notebook and copy and paste the relevant cells (mind the context!!!) to another notebook and create and article or book. However, make sure that you have an overall idea what you want to do with this information, e.g., a question to ask/answer in the scientific discussion, and that you add something meaningful to it. Otherwise it?s only ?a transference of bones from one graveyard to another? (to quote J. Frank Dobie regarding the average PhD thesis).

After all, the information you have is useless unless guided by a purpose, and damaging if not used correctly. But organized you can do things of astonishing power and complexity that you never thought you were capable of.

Jailed for 23 years, freed man suffers heart attack a day later

A man released 23 years after he was wrongly convicted for the 1991 murder of a New York rabbi suffered a heart attack on his second day as a free man, his attorney confirmed to NBC News.

David Ranta was hospitalized after the heart attack, attorney Pierre Sussman said. The man's heart attack was first reported by the New York Times.

?On Friday evening, David Renta suffered a heart attack. My office is happy to report that he?s been stabilized and is being treated in cardiac intensive care at a metropolitan hospital,? Sussman said in a written statement. ?He is presently resting, with his family by his bedside. We will continue to ensure that David receives the required, ongoing medical attention he needs.?

Ranta, 58, spent more than two decades in jail after he was found him guilty of killing Hasidic rabbi Chaskel Werzberger. A lengthy review of his case ended with prosecutors admitting that the case against Ranta had fallen apart over the years. He was freed at a Brooklyn courthouse on Thursday.

?The accumulated trauma of being falsely convicted and incarcerated for 23 years, coupled with the intense emotions experienced surrounding his release, has had a profound impact on his health,? Sussman said in the statement.

Long-pent emotions welled for relatives when the judge vacated Ranta?s sentence. The man's pregnant daughter, who was two years old when he was jailed, were among those present.

?Sir, you are free to go,? acting state Supreme Court Justice Miriam Cyrulnik said at the Brooklyn courthouse.

?The evidence no longer establishes the defendant?s guilt is beyond a reasonable doubt,? Assistant District Attorney John O?Mara told Reuters.

?I?m overwhelmed,? Ranta told reporters after being cleared. ?Right now, I feel like I?m under water, swimming.?

Political picks: Obama taps top seeds, McConnell Is a homer

Politicians have unleashed their NCAA picks, and no Final Four has gone unturned for latent political meaning.

President Obama has carved out a niche as the nation's top political NCAA predictor, holding his annual tete-a-tete with ESPN's Andy Katz. But this year it's a Republican, Florida Sen. Marco Rubio, who's leading the bracketology charge with a set of picks that should probably turn some basketball-knowing heads.

Here are the NCAA brackets of three incredibly powerful people, and one person who influences the lawmakers who do the actual voting.

Marco Rubio

The Florida senator has upsets all over the place. Notre Dame (7) over Ohio State (2). Ole Miss (12) over Wisconsin (5). UNLV (5) in the Elite Eight. VCU (5) over Kansas (1)! In the Final Four, he picks his undergraduate alma mater, Florida (3), over his law school alma mater, Miami (2).

As brackets go, this one's for tournament dreamers. Unless, that is, Rubio planned to enter these picks in an NCAA pool that awards seed differential-in which case he's doing it for the money.

The bracket proves one of two things: Either Rubio is a champion of underdogs, or he's a hardcore gambler at heart.

President Obama

Nothing too exciting here. Obama's Final Four consists of two one-seeds, a two-seed, and a three-seed.

The president knows his basketball, but this bracket is distinctly lacking in verve. We could talk about why he picked Indiana-a red state that's kind of a swing state, etc.-or we could talk about how his biggest upsets are Minnesota (11) over UCLA (6), Belmont (11) over New Mexico (3), and Michigan (4) over Kansas (1). This is the bracket of a man who just wants to keep things going smoothly, not rock the boat, and keep everyone calm while he's in Israel.

In other words, Obama and Rubio have picked nearly opposite brackets. Which makes sense.

Although their Final Four's look similar, with top seeds in all spots, their Sweet Sixteen's are diametrically opposed to one another (political jargon for opposite-when in Rome). Here's a simple way of looking at it. The combined seedings of Obama's Sweet Sixteen comes out to a paltry 41. That means that he's almost exclusively choosing higher seeded teams to advance. Rubio's Sweet Sixteen, on the other hand, has a total seeding number of 70, meaning he's got low seeds all over the damn place! Go figure, the liberal goes conservative and the conservative goes all whimsical.

Mitch McConnell

There's really only one thing you need to know about the Senate minority leader's bracket, which can be found at WHAS 11: He's got Western Kentucky (16) topping Kansas (1) and Villanova (9) before inexplicably losing to Virginia Commonwealth (5).

He also picked Louisville (1), where he went to college as an undergrad, to go all the way.

McConnell is the ultimate homer.

Grover Norquist

The president of Americans for Tax Reform included a preamble to his bracket, scrawled at the top: "Hey taxpayer, I chose my winners based on the lowest top marginal income tax rate in each team's home state. In case of a tie, I went with the Right to Work state. Good luck with your brackets! -Grover"

Norquist has done something few are willing to do. He's filled out a bracket based on pure ideology.

Researchers with the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE)'s Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory (Berkeley Lab) have once again demonstrated the incredible capabilities of metamaterials ? artificial nanoconstructs whose optical properties arise from their physical structure rather than their chemical composition. Engineering a unique two-dimensional sheet of gold nanoantennas, the researchers were able to obtain the strongest signal yet of the photonic spin Hall effect, an optical phenomenon of quantum mechanics that could play a prominent role in the future of computing.

"With metamaterial, we were able to greatly enhance a naturally weak effect to the point where it was directly observable with simple detection techniques," said Xiang Zhang, a faculty scientist with Berkeley Lab's Materials Sciences Division who led this research. "We also demonstrated that metamaterials not only allow us to control the propagation of light but also allos control of circular polarization. This could have profound consequences for information encoding and processing."

Zhang is the corresponding author of a paper describing this work in the journal Science. The paper is titled "Photonic Spin Hall Effect at Metasurfaces." Co-authors are Xiaobo Yin, Ziliang Ye, Jun Sun Rho and Yuan Wang.

The spin Hall effect, named in honor of physicist Edwin Hall, describes the curved path that spinning electrons follow as they move through a semiconductor. The curved movement arises from the interaction between the physical motion of the electron and its spin ? a quantized angular momentum that gives rise to magnetic moment. Think of a baseball pitcher putting spin on a ball to make it curve to the left or right.

"Light moving through a metal also displays the spin Hall effect but the photonic spin Hall effect is very weak because the spin angular momentum of photons and spin-orbit interactions are very small," says Xiaobo Yin, a member of Zhang's research group and the lead author of the Science paper. "In the past, people have managed to observe the photonic spin Hall effect by generating the process over and over again to obtain an accumulative signal, or by using highly sophisticated quantum measurements. Our metamaterial makes the photonic spin Hall effect observable even with a simple camera."

Metamaterials have garnered a lot of attention in recent years because their unique structure affords electromagnetic properties unattainable in nature. For example, a metamaterial can have a negative index of refraction, the ability to bend light backwards, unlike all materials found in nature, which bend light forward. Zhang, who holds the Ernest S. Kuh Endowed Chair Professor of Mechanical Engineering at the University of California (UC) Berkeley, where he also directs the National Science Foundation's Nano-scale Science and Engineering Center, has been at the forefront of metamaterials research. For this study, he and his group fashioned metamaterial surfaces about 30 nanometers thick (a human hair by comparison is between 50,000 and 100,000 nanometers thick). These metasurfaces were constructed from V-shaped gold nanoantennas whose geometry could be configured by adjusting the length and orientation of the arms of the Vs.

"We chose eight different antenna configurations with optimized geometry parameters to generate a linear phase gradient along the x direction," says Yin. "This enabled us to control the the propagation of the light and introduce strong photon spin-orbit interactions through rapid changes in direction. The photonic spin Hall effect depends on the curvature of the light's trajectory, so the sharper the change in propagation direction, the stronger the effect."

Since the entire metasurface sample measured only 0.3 millimeters, a 50-millimeter lens was used to project the transmission of the light through the metamaterial onto a charge-coupled device (CCD) camera for imaging. From the CCD images, the researchers determined that both the control of light propagation and the giant photonic spin Hall effect were the direct results of the designed meta-material. This finding opens up a wealth of possibilities for new technologies.

"The controllable spin-orbit interaction and momentum transfer between spin and orbital angular momentum allows us to manipulate the information encoded on the polarization of light, much like the 0 and 1 of today's electronic devices," Yin says. "But photonic devices could encode more information and provide greater information security than conventional electronic devices."

Yin says the ability to control left and right circular polarization of light in metamaterial surfaces should allow for the formation of optical elements, like highly coveted "flat lenses," or the management of light polarization without using wave plates.

"Metamaterials provide us with tremendous design freedom that will allow us to modulate the strength of the photonic spin Hall effect at different spatial locations," Yin says. "We knew the photonic spin Hall effect existed in nature but it was so hard to detect. Now, with the right metamaterials we can not only enhance this effect we can harness it for our own purposes."

Rebuilding U.K. Tourism BRIC by BRIC | Adventure Travel News

Assistant Editor?s Note: In an article originally published by Hotel Industry Magazine,?Euromonitor International?s?Franziska Brandenburger explains why the future of the UK hotel industry lies with the BRIC nations.

2012 put the UK on the map ? and many expect the events of last year to?positively influence incoming tourism?over the next two years.

As business and?leisure travel from Europe and the US to the UK is on the decline?due to the economic climate and?turmoil in the Eurozone, companies operating in the travel and tourism industry are paying more attention to travellers from the BRIC nations.

The first half of 2012 saw sharp increases in incoming travel to the UK, especially from Thailand, South Korea, Brazil, South Africa and India, which is proof that the travel and tourism industry needs to start focusing on travellers from emerging markets. Industry experts believe that Chinese travellers are the most important inbound tourists to business from the BRICs, followed by Brazil, Russia and India.

Chinese Middle Class Fuel Spending

Discretionary spending is rising across all income levels in the BRIC markets, but it is the feted middle classes, and their growing propensity to travel, that have opened up opportunities for hotels in particular.

In particular, China?s rising levels of disposable income have spurred the growth of the Chinese middle class.

According to recent analysis by the Carlyle Group: ?By some estimates, the country?s persistent growth will bring nearly 100 million households into the middle and affluent classes. [This trend highlights] strong growth in aggregate consumption, as millions experience rising incomes and consumption shifts from the bare essentials to more discretionary items.?

Per capita annual disposable income currently sits at ?2,151, with 7.1% projected annual growth between 2012 and 2020, amongst the highest growth rates in the world.

Russia

Russia is one of Europe?s largest consumer markets with rapidly rising consumer expenditure and annual disposable income levels. Russia is also one of the world?s largest and most rapidly expanding luxury markets, driven by an increasing number of super wealthy.

This dynamic market is set to continue its solid growth. In 2012, Russian per capita annual disposable income stood at ?4,833, with it predicted to grow by 3.1% annually from 2012 to 2020. The country was hit hard during the economic and financial crisis in 2009, which means that regular Russians will search for greater bargains, while the very rich will continue their high-spending lifestyles.

Brazil

Against the backdrop of economic slowdown, Brazil?s disposable income and consumer expenditure levels have remained robust on the back of high employment and a burgeoning middle class.

Brazilians now enjoy strong purchasing power and more room for discretionary spending, with a large section of the population having moved out of poverty and low-paid labour over the 2005-2012 period. Brazil?s annual disposable income per capita stood at ?5,212 in 2012 and is set to grow by 3.7% annually over the next eight years.

Visas Hinder Travel

One hurdle constraining growth in inbound flows from the BRICs is a need for travellers from Russia, India and China to obtain a?visa to enter the UK. This really?limits the UK?s ability to compete?head to head with other European destinations.

Further planned increases in Air Passenger Duty (APD) in 2013 pose another threat and will particularly affect passengers on long-haul flights.

Industry experts believe that Brazil and India will be the BRIC countries most affected by the APD hike as these countries? tourists will most likely avoid travelling to the UK. The UK has the highest rate of air tax in the world, almost 400% more than the majority of EU countries.

The strength of sterling against the euro is also an important factor taken into account by foreign travellers when deciding whether to visit the UK. While the Chinese Yuan strengthened against the euro in 2012, the exchange rate with the pound sterling stayed relatively stable, boosting inbound flows to Europe from China.

Rising competition from other European destinations like Italy and France adds further pressure. For example, arrivals from Brazil dropped from 179,000 in 2008 to 117,000 in 2010 and, while expected to grow again, inbound tourism from Brazil is not likely to fully recover over the next five years.

UK Strategy

Implementing appropriate strategies to court these visitors will have a significant impact on arrivals and consequently the performance of well-prepared businesses.

Leading hotel chains should be looking to adapt to the specific needs and tastes of tourists from BRIC nations to benefit from this potential. Visitors from Russia and China in particular are often fascinated by the British monarchy, its traditions and etiquette, so attractions and tours related to the royal family are also expected to do well. And while London will be the key beneficiary, it is believed that, given the long-haul nature of visits, the opportunity extends beyond the capital.

Consequently, other areas of the UK that gear up appropriately will benefit, as BRIC travellers, taking longer holidays than many from closer geographies, take the time to tour around the country and make the most of their trips.

VisitBritain is particularly targeting Chinese tourists to increase visitor spending in UK hotels by ?500 million and create 14,000 new jobs by 2015. In order to achieve these targets, the UK government has increased its GREAT marketing campaign, focusing on attracting visitors from China, by ?8 million.

Clearly, the future of the UK hotel industry lies with BRICs, and many of leading hotel groups like Hilton and Starwood are introducing Chinese-friendly services to capitalise on the opportunity. These include Chinese restaurants, staff fluent in Mandarin and Chinese, as well as Chinese programmes available on TV.

Beyond BRIC

UK hoteliers should also pay attention to the second tier of emerging tourism economies, also called SLIMMA nations, which include Sri Lanka, Indonesia, Malaysia, Mexico and Argentina.

In particular, visitors from Mexico, Argentina and Indonesia with growing disposable income levels could become the next powerhouses of the travel and tourism industry.

WASHINGTON (AP) ? Supreme Court justices disagreed Monday over whether states can require would-be voters to prove they are U.S. citizens before using a federal registration system designed to make signing up easier.

Arizona and other states told the justices the precaution is needed to keep illegal immigrants and other noncitizens from voting. But some justices asked whether states have the right to force people to document their citizenship when Congress ordered the states to accept and use federal "motor voter" registration cards that only ask registrants to swear on paper that they are U.S. citizens.

"I have a real big disconnect with how you can be saying you're accepting and using, when you're not registering people when they use it the way the federal law permits them to," Justice Sonia Sotomayor said to Arizona Attorney General Thomas C. Horne.

Said Horne: "It is the burden of the states to determine the eligibility of the voters."

This is the second voting eligibility issue the high court is tackling this session. Last month, several justices voiced deep skepticism about whether a section of the Voting Rights Act of 1965, a law that has helped millions of minorities exercise their right to vote, especially in areas of the Deep South, was still needed.

The court will make decisions in both later this year.

In Monday's case, the court is deciding the legality of Arizona's requirement that prospective voters document their U.S. citizenship in order to use a registration form produced under the federal "motor voter" registration law. The 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals said that that 1993 National Voter Registration Act, which doesn't require such documentation, trumps Arizona's Proposition 200 passed in 2004.

Arizona appealed that decision to the Supreme Court.

The case focuses on Arizona, which has tangled frequently with the federal government over immigration issues involving the Mexican border. But it has broader implications because four other states ? Alabama, Georgia, Kansas and Tennessee ? have similar requirements, and 12 other states are contemplating such legislation.

The federal "motor voter" law, enacted in 1993 to expand voter registration, requires states to offer voter registration when a resident applies for a driver's license or certain benefits. Another provision of that law ? the one at issue before the court ? requires states to allow would-be voters to fill out mail-in registration cards and swear they are citizens under penalty of perjury, but it doesn't require them to show proof. Under Proposition 200, Arizona officials require an Arizona driver's license issued after 1996, a U.S. birth certificate, a passport or other similar document, or the state will reject the federal registration application form.

Justice Antonin Scalia seemed to think that a sworn statement wasn't enough to allow people to register to vote. "If you're willing to violate the voting laws, I suppose you're willing to violate the perjury laws," he said.

But lawyer Patricia Millett, representing those challenging the law, answered that courts accept sworn statements as proof in criminal cases, some of which end in executions. Congress decided that a sworn statement with the risk of perjury was sufficient to register to vote in the federal system, she said. "This is not just a ticket into the state's own registration process so they can go, 'Thank you very much, (throw) it in the garbage can, now do what we would like you to do.' It is a registration form," Millett said.

The Arizona requirement applies only to people who seek to register using the federal mail-in form. The state has its own form and an online system to register to vote when renewing a driver's license. The appeals court ruling did not affect proof of citizenship requirements using the state forms.

Justice Samuel Alito asked if Arizona kept two different voter rolls, one for people who used the state system and one for those who use the federal. The answer was no.

That means that some people face one set of requirements to vote, and others a different set, he said. "This seems to me like a crazy system," Alito said.

Opponents of Arizona's law see it as an attack on vulnerable voter groups such as minorities, immigrants and the elderly. They say they've counted more than 31,000 potentially legal voters in Arizona who easily could have registered before Proposition 200 but were blocked initially by the law in the 20 months after it passed in 2004. They say about 20 percent of those thwarted were Latino.

But Arizona officials say they should be able to pass laws to stop illegal immigrants and other noncitizens from getting on their voting rolls. The Arizona voting law was part of a package that also denied some government benefits to illegal immigrants and required Arizonans to show identification before voting.

Checks since last fall by The Associated Press showed that in Colorado, election officials found 441 noncitizens on the voter rolls out of nearly 3.5 million voters. Florida officials found 207, or 0.001 percent of the state's 11.4 million registered voters. In North Carolina, 79 people admitted to election officials that they weren't citizens and were removed from the rolls, along with 331 others who didn't respond to repeated inquires.

Horne compared the Arizona system to an airline sending out e-tickets instead of paper tickets but asking for identification before allowing passengers to board the airplane. "That would not contradict the statement that they are accepting and using e-tickets," he said.

But Justice Elena Kagan didn't accept that analogy, saying Arizona went further. "Wouldn't it contradict it if instead of saying 'Well, we'd like you to offer identification,' saying, 'Well, we'd like you also to have a paper ticket'?" she said.

Arizona asked the federal government to add the state's citizenship eligibility requirements to the federal form but was turned away. Scalia said the state should have sued to overturn that decision. "Why didn't you do that?" said Scalia, who indicated that he would look favorably on such a challenge.

The decision not to challenge was his predecessor's, Horne said.

The case is 12-71, Arizona v. Inter Tribal Council of Arizona, Inc.

GREENSBURG, Pa. (AP) ? A small Catholic college outside Pittsburgh mourned the loss of a women's lacrosse coach who died along with her unborn child when the team's bus crashed on the way to a game, remembering her Sunday as warm, outgoing and a natural leader.

Team members and fans at a Seton Hill University baseball game observed a minute of silence for the two crash victims. With the players in the background on a cold day, students and other mourners visited a tribute set up in front of a lacrosse net next to the baseball field that featured bouquets of flowers, stuffed animals, a lacrosse stick, a whistle and a candle sat in front of a team photo and signs reading "In memoriam - Kristina Quigley - Forever a Griffin."

Players and coaches from Seton Hill were among 23 people aboard when the bus crashed into a tree Saturday morning on the Pennsylvania Turnpike outside Harrisburg. The team was headed to an afternoon game at Millersville University, about 50 miles from the crash site in central Pennsylvania. Police are investigating the cause.

Head coach Quigley, 30, of Greensburg, died of her injuries at a hospital, Cumberland County authorities said. Quigley was about six months pregnant, and her unborn son didn't survive. The bus driver, Anthony Guaetta, 61, of Johnstown, died at the scene.

Saturday's game and a Sunday home game were canceled after the crash, and Seton Hill, a Catholic liberal arts school of about 2,500 students, said a memorial Mass was planned for Sunday night on campus. The school is also offering grief counseling to students.

Duquesne University women's lacrosse coach Mike Scerbo remembered Quigley as a warm, outgoing person who immediately impressed him when he hired her to be an assistant during the 2008 season. Quigley, a Duquesne alum, spent just one season under Scerbo before moving to South Carolina to start Erskine College's NCAA Division II program.

"In that time, I really saw how much passion she had to be a coach, and how much she enjoyed working with the kids," Scerbo said. "She was a teacher, and she wanted to help kids grow and learn, not just about the sport, but about life."

She spent three years at Erskine before taking the top job at Seton Hill for the 2012 season. She stayed in touch with Scerbo, often seeking his guidance and showing up at the Duquesne alumni game.

"She was a very happy person, very passionate about life, about her players, about her job and most importantly about her family," Scerbo said.

Quigley, a native of Baltimore, was married and had a young son, Gavin, the school said.

Two victims flown to Penn State Hershey Medical Center remained there Sunday, and no information was released about them. A woman injured in the crash was discharged Sunday afternoon from another hospital. All others aboard the bus were taken to hospitals as a precaution, but almost all were treated and released.

Police couldn't immediately say what had caused the crash. The front side of the bus, which was towed from the scene Saturday night, was shorn away, and the vehicle came to rest upright about 70 yards from the highway at the bottom of a grassy slope.

The bus operator, Mlaker Charter & Tours, of Davidsville, Pa., is up to date on its inspections, which include bus and driver safety checks, said Jennifer Kocher, a spokeswoman for the state Public Utility Commission, which regulates bus companies.

The agency's motor safety inspectors could think of no accidents or violations involving the company that would raise a red flag, she said, though complete safety records were not available Saturday.

On Tuesday, another bus carrying college lacrosse players from a Vermont team was hit by a sports car that spun out of control on a wet highway in upstate New York, sending the bus toppling onto its side, police said. One person in the car died.
